Some of you have been asking what it’s like to ride in Bhutan, so here’s my little 3 part guide along with some BTS of our flight to Paro!
PART 1: Getting to there
Bhutan is a remote country that’s hard to get to. It is between India and China, deep in the Himalayas. Bhutan’s location isn’t the only challenging part, the government requires every visitor to have a visa, be booked with an official Bhutanese guide service and pay $100 USD per day.
HOW ARE YOU GETTNG TO BHUTAN?
There are two airlines that fly to Bhutan, Drukair and Bhutan Airlines. Drukair flies direct from Bangkok, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and Singapore into Paro (PBH).
PLAN AHEAD - Get your documents in order and apply for the visas you may need to get to each country on your way to Bhutan.
BRING SPARE PARTS - Bhutan’s location combined with mountain biking being a developing sport, makes getting spare parts nearly impossible. Make sure to pack extra brake pads and any specialty parts for your bike (I bent my derailleur hanger midway through my trip)
FUN FACT Paro International Airport is one of the hardest runways to land in the world! Paro, which is located at an altitude of 7,300 feet is surrounded by some of the highest mountains on Earth, with peaks towering over 18,000 feet. Less than 50 pilots in the world are qualified to land here!
Stay tuned for Part 2, I’ll share more about the riding (:
