HOFA has a great read on their blog. I'll add something small to it.

5 Things to start sounding better!

- Tip 1: The lead vocals rule!
Band or Solo Artist defines the placement of the vocal.

- Tip 2: Keep an eye on the stereo image
Mono is still necessary! If everything "is stereo", nothing is stereo.

- Tip 3: Don't rely too much on presets!
Templates & Presets can help, but if you are open for business then you need to adapt to every single project. Learn your tools and adapt them accordingly.

- Tip 4: Think about the dynamics of the song
I can't tell you how many times I've gotten Mixes or Multitracks with 0 Dynamics... there's Micro & Macro dynamics.

- Tip 5: Make the chorus catchy
Even if you only got a copy pasted chorus, how can you make it exciting? Automating filters, a bit of extra distortion? Make it exciting.
