Ah got it — you don’t want the repeated “Do the confused need...” line.
Here’s the same story, cleaned up:
---
*The Middle*
The city looked the same in every direction, so Maya stopped checking the map.
She stood in the street with two people on either side of her. No uniforms. No badges. But everyone kept looking at her like she was supposed to decide who went first.
One of them asked, "Which way?"
Maya opened her mouth and a question came out. Before she finished it, it had already answered itself.
They started walking. Or maybe the street started moving past them. It was hard to tell.
That morning she’d found a badge in her pocket. It didn’t belong to her. It didn’t belong to anyone. She held it anyway, just to have something solid.
Around them, ten different voices gave ten different orders. She wanted quiet. She also wanted to hear all of it.
"You’re in charge," the man on her left said.
"No, you are," the woman on her right said.
Maya laughed. If everyone was in charge, then no one was.
There was no sign. No rule that fit. Just the three of them circling the same question without saying it out loud.
So they kept walking. Three people. No titles. No plan. Just the middle, and the sides, and the space between.
