1997 → 2026

Knowledge. 1989. Still perfect.

Operation Ivy’s only album is still in my all-time Top 10.

Matt Freeman is one of the reasons I picked up a bass and one of the reasons I never put it down.

Today felt like a good day to play Knowledge while wearing an Op Ivy shirt, standing in front of a signed Jesse Michaels piece, and remembering why this record meant so much in the first place.

And every time Knowledge ends, I find myself doing the same thing I’ve been doing for years:

letting the rest of the album play.

May 28 is a special date in punk history. Not only was it the day Energy was released in 1989, it was also the day Operation Ivy played its final show at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley. Fittingly, the opening band that night was a newly renamed group making its debut under a name that would soon become famous: Green Day.

That groove nobody talks about!

One of my all-time favorite White Frogs songs to play.
Everything just clicks on this one — the vocals, guitars, melodies and energy. It has that mix of melody and punk chaos that always felt very “us.”

I still think creatively this was one of our strongest eras as songwriters and as a band.

“Far From the Shore” was recorded for a 4-way split with Pseudo Heroes, Closure and Smalls.
Written by Matheus Florido, with lyrics and the legendary “oozin’ aahs” by Prandini.

Great sessions at Play Rec Studios with Quincas, Ciaglia and Victor Rice behind the board.

Still proud of this one.

Bad Religion at Ciudad de Mexico

And I wanna conquer the world
Give all the idiots a brand-new religion
Put an end to poverty, uncleanliness, and toil
Promote equality in all of my decisions
With a quick wink of the eye
And a “God, you must be joking”

“Regret” — but through a different lens.

This week I revisited one of my all-time favorites, inspired by the The Get Up Kids version and Robert Pope’s approach.

Instead of following Peter Hook’s iconic melodic basslines from New Order, Robert locks into the synth — leaving space for the keys and reshaping the whole feel of the song. He even anticipates the re-entry when the band comes back in after the breaks, which adds a completely different kind of drive.

Same track, completely different role. That’s what makes bass so interesting.

Also… been playing this on a Fender Vintera II Precision Bass — such a fun instrument with a killer tone. Looks like Fender is already moving it with discounts ahead of the Vintera III.

Honestly, this is one of those songs that’s just fun in any version.

Do you have a favorite take on “Regret”?

“Minor Threat” — but the moment was major.

Brian Baker signed first — we were playing with Bad Religion or I was punishing him with a Dag Nasty interview so… why not ask?

Different timing and Fugazi was touring Brazil. Same thought: why not?
Ian MacKaye looked at it… that face. Priceless. He was cool enough to sign it …

Just some hardcore history memorabilia — and yeah… how unpunk is it to collect signed stuff?
