Iron Claw, Sean Durkin, 2023

Directed by Robert Eggers

Robert Eggers has quickly become one of the most fascinating filmmakers working in horror today. His movies are known for their dark atmosphere, historical detail, disturbing folklore, and stories that feel like they were pulled straight out of another century.

He broke out with The Witch in 2015, following a Puritan family whose lives begin to fall apart after suspected witchcraft enters their isolated world. Then came The Lighthouse, a strange and psychological nightmare starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.

In 2022, Eggers went bigger with The Northman, an epic Viking revenge story starring Alexander Skarsgård, Anya Taylor Joy and Nicole Kidman. Then came Nosferatu in 2024, his haunting take on the classic vampire story, starring Bill Skarsgård, Lily Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult.

Now, Eggers is going after another legendary monster, the werewolf.

His upcoming film Werwulf is set in 13th century England and stars Aaron Taylor Johnson, Willem Dafoe and Lily Rose Depp. The story follows a cursed medieval farmer who transforms into a murderous werewolf. Eggers has also teased that it may be his darkest film yet.

Werwulf is currently scheduled to hit theaters on December 25, 2026.
