Khazad-Dûm: The Dwarf's Mansion - Part 2

If anything is clear about Khazad-Dûm, it is that in the eastern part of the mountains, there was a series of caverns that connected to the Valley of Azanulbizar. From these caverns, the Dwarves began to trace and excavate in a westerly direction, thus going even deeper into the depths of the earth. In the westernmost part of the kingdom was the Gate of Holly, located approximately 320 kilometers south of Rivendell and 380 kilometers north of Isengard.

Although there are not many tales or stories about life in Khazad-Dûm, we can get a fairly clear idea about it, mainly about how this kingdom of the Dwarves was organized and distributed during part of the Second Age and during the Third Age of Middle-earth. At that time, access to the Naugrim kingdom could be made through two entrances: the Eastern entrance, which connected directly with Azanulbizar, and the Western entrance, which was next to the Sirannon stream and communicated with the Acebeda Gate. Between both entrances, there was a distance of approximately 65 kilometers (following a straight line), and it is estimated that the depth of Khazad-Dûm was approximately 4000 meters. In this enormous space, one could find rooms, tunnels, galleries, wells, ventilators, and halls.

Now, when we talk about the Western entrance and doors, we are talking about a fascinating entrance composed of two beautiful doors. These were the work and example of the mastery and craftsmanship of two cultures because, for a time, the Naugrim of Khazad-Dûm and the Elves of Eregion had good relations both commercially and in the exchange of knowledge. So, these beautiful doors were a joint work of both the Elves and the Dwarves. This door was a secret door and, like all the secret doors of the Dwarves, it was an impossible task to see it from the outside. It only opened when the correct password was pronounced. To be able to see this door, it was adorned with simple drawings that were drawn on the rock and covered with Ithildin, a substance derived from Mithril. Ithildin had the property of lighting up with the light of the Moon and the stars that were reflected in said material and, in the same way, required the use of certain Elven rituals and spells.

Khazad-Dûm: The Dwarf's Mansion - Part 1

The name of this beautiful and imposing city of the Dwarves means Mansion of the Khazâd and represents the pinnacle of art and power of this formidable race. It is even considered a symbol for its people, and it is one of the grandest works of engineering and architecture in all of Middle Earth. Another translation of Khazad-Dûm is from Westron, meaning The Mine of the Dwarf.

The name in Sindarin would be Hadhodrond, which means Vault of the Dwarves. However, this was not the Elvish name most commonly used to refer to this city; that name was Moria, which translates to Dark Pit or Black Abyss.

This kingdom is known to be the oldest, most famous, and most powerful of the Dwarf kingdoms. It was located in the caves overlooking Azanulbizar, situated at the center of the Misty Mountains, just below the peaks of Caradhras, Fanuidhol, and Celebdil, in what are rightly known as the Mountains of Moria. Khazad-Dûm was composed of a long series of mines, caves, and caverns located under the peaks of Caradhras, Celebdil, and Fanuidhol in the Misty Mountains.

The origin of this system of mines and caves remains unknown due to the scarcity of information regarding the characteristics and geological forms. As a result, it is difficult to establish the origin and formation of these caverns. The limited descriptions available suggest that the mines featured holes, cracks, chasms, arches, and bridges. However, it cannot be determined for certain whether these were natural formations or works made by the Dwarves. Despite the lack of information about Khazad-Dûm, it is certain that these caves and caverns housed large, vast, and rich mines filled with veins of precious metals and gems, with Mithril being the main source of wealth. Therefore, it is probable that the predominant composition was some type of crystalline rock. Unlike its sister peaks, Caradhras had a pink hue, while Celebdil and Fanuidhol had greyish or silvery colors. Based on this, it is assumed that at least Caradhras has a fiery origin, which would mean that it was created after a volcanic eruption.
