🇬🇧🇬🇧Do lots of brits think the uk sucks because they lack context?
you hear a lot of moaning about how terrible the uk is and how its going to the dogs, but having traveled a fair bit i always think the people saying this mustn't know what other places are like.

when you say the uk is terrible where are you comparing it with? Most of the 200 odd countries in the world are way worse and by a happy accident you ended up being born or living here! Its like winning the lottery.

My feeling is most people don't even think about how s**t other countries are. there are tons of countries where they're basically still mostly farming to survive. They're at war, or corrupt or just poor. There are countries which arent poor necessarily but which you probably wouldnt want to live in due to lack of development, crime, lack of freedom, pollution or corruption. Places like central Asia, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Nicaragua, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, Russia, China, etc etc. some of these places don't even have consistent electricity we're doing pretty well! We should be proud!

👑The late Queen Elizabeth II is pictured riding her beloved horse Burmese during Trooping the Colour in 1980.

Burmese, a striking black mare, was gifted to the Queen by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in 1969. She went on to carry the Queen for 18 consecutive Trooping the Colour ceremonies, becoming an iconic and inseparable part of the annual event.

In 1981, during Trooping the Colour, six shots were fired toward the Queen. Remarkably, Burmese remained calm and composed, allowing the Queen to continue the procession without interruption. Their shared poise in that moment further cemented Burmese’s place in royal history.

When Burmese retired in 1986, the Queen chose not to ride in the ceremony again, stating that it would not feel the same without her trusted companion. Burmese is remembered as one of the most cherished horses associated with Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen also shared a deep and enduring relationship with the RCMP, who gifted her eight horses over the years, including Burmese. This long-standing bond, dating back to 1904, was reflected in the RCMP’s participation in her funeral procession and other ceremonial occasions involving the royal family.

Every evening, without fail, our ginger cat would curl up on the pillow right beside my mother's head. It was their quiet ritual—a soft, warm presence that brought comfort to both of them. As my mother's health slowly faded, I stepped in to care for the cat more often, feeding her, brushing her fur, and making sure she felt loved.
Seven months later, my mother passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the familiarity she cherished most. Even in her final moments, the cat remained faithfully in her usual spot, nestled close.
When the time came for the funeral staff to gently take my mother away, the cat refused to leave the bed. She stayed there, rooted in place, as if holding vigil. After my mother was gone, the cat began pacing restlessly across the sheets, letting out deep, mournful cries that seemed to echo through the entire house. Those cries weren't the usual meows—they were raw, filled with unmistakable sorrow. It was heartbreaking to witness.
For nearly fifteen minutes, she wailed in grief. Unable to bear it any longer, I carefully scooped her into my arms. Astonishingly, she didn't resist. Until that day, she had never allowed me to hold her like that—she had always been my mother's cat above all else. But in that moment of shared loss, something changed. From then on, she became my shadow, my constant companion.
In the weeks and months that followed, her personality shifted in subtle but profound ways. She grew bolder, more affectionate toward me, seeking out my lap and my touch in ways she never had before. I've shared my life with cats for as long as I can remember, but I had never seen one grieve so deeply, so visibly.
Animals feel loss in ways we are only beginning to understand. This little orange tabby didn't just mourn—she chose to heal alongside me. In her quiet way, she taught me that love doesn't end with goodbye. It simply finds a new place to rest.
This story is a heartfelt reminder of the deep emotional bonds animals form—and how, even in grief, they can guide us toward healing. 🐾❤️
