🌠 The Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Tonight Under a Perfectly Dark Sky

The Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak overnight from August 12 into the early hours of August 13, with up to 100 meteors per hour possible under ideal conditions. These fast, bright meteors can leave glowing trails across the sky and are created by debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

This year's display gets an extra advantage: the peak occurs during a New Moon, so there will be virtually no moonlight to wash out the fainter meteors. That means darker skies and potentially better views of the shower.

🚀 NASA Just Found a Way to Keep Voyager 2 Exploring for Another Year

Nearly 50 years after launch, NASA’s Voyager 2 is still sending scientific data from interstellar space. Its nuclear power supply is slowly weakening, losing roughly 4 watts of electrical power each year as its plutonium-238 decays. In 2026, engineers introduced a new power-saving strategy known as “Big Bang.” Instead of simply shutting down another science instrument, they switched off several nonessential systems and replaced some functions with lower-power alternatives while keeping the spacecraft warm enough to survive the extreme cold of deep space.

The strategy means Voyager 2 can continue operating its three remaining science instruments for at least another year, allowing it to study the environment beyond the Sun’s heliosphere. Launched in 1977, Voyager 2 remains the only spacecraft to have visited Uranus and Neptune, making every additional year of its journey another remarkable achievement in space exploration.

On December 27, 2004, Earth was struck by an extraordinary burst of gamma rays from the magnetar SGR 1806-20, located about 50,000 light-years away on the far side of the Milky Way. 🌌 The James Webb Space Telescope discovered one of the earliest known galaxies to have stopped forming stars, JADES-GS-z7-01-QU. We see it when the Universe was only about 700 million years old. JWST's NIRSpec observations revealed evidence that the galaxy had recently shut down its star formation, making it a post-starburst galaxy.

⭐ The galaxy contains an estimated 400–600 million times the mass of the Sun in stars. Most of those stars appear to have formed during a short burst lasting only about 20–100 million years, before star formation rapidly stopped. The Milky Way contains far more than the stars we can see. Scientists estimate that most of our galaxy’s mass is made of dark matter, an invisible substance that does not interact with light. Although we cannot see it directly, its gravitational influence affects how stars and other objects move through the galaxy.

The Milky Way is estimated to have a total mass of roughly 1.5 trillion Suns, with most of that mass believed to exist within a huge dark-matter halo surrounding the galaxy. The motion of stars and globular clusters shows that visible matter alone cannot explain the galaxy’s observed gravitational behavior.

The mystery is that scientists still don't know exactly what dark matter is. We know it behaves gravitationally, but its true nature remains one of the biggest unanswered questions in modern physics. So when you look at the Milky Way’s billions of stars, you're seeing only a small fraction of what makes up our galaxy.
