In 1189, Henry II of England came to this hilltop to admit defeat before Philip Augustus of France. The fortress changed hands for three centuries until Jean Le Breton, Finance Minister to Francis I and the man who supervised the construction of Chambord, razed everything except the keep and built the last great Renaissance château on the Loire.

Jérôme Bonaparte owned it. The Marquis de Castellane redecorated it. A nineteenth-century owner tore out the gardens and planted an English park. In 1906, a Spanish doctor named Joachim Carvallo and his American wife Ann Coleman bought the estate, saved the château from demolition, and spent decades recreating the Renaissance gardens from period documents. The Carvallo family still owns it. The gardens are entirely organic. The boxwood in the Jardins d’Amour draws the same patterns today that the period documents described five centuries ago.
