February 6th 2022.We left LaCruz Marina right on schedule. I gave the command to my friend and Captain of 17 years Noe Ramirez full speed to the islands. The sky that morning was spectacular, that beautiful Banderas Bay orange was just coming into full color, it was beautiful then out of the corner of my eye I seen a flapper, a whale laying on it side flapping its pectoral fin, he was getting more and more aggressive as we turned the boat at full throttle and headed toward our flapper. As a professional marine photographer a flapper means a possible jumper, a jumper as the sun comes up, with the sun beams is called the Holy Grail of whale photography, could it be that after years and years, 5 days a week the whale GODs were going to smile upon us. as we reached our flapper and stopped about 250 feet away, the sun was about 30 seconds from rising, oh my GOD could this be the day. The whale disappeared than missiled out of the water, 50 tons of love just 250 feet away, I started barking commands to Noe for full reverse, he was slapping the water again, the sun was up no more than 20 seconds, up, I yelled more reverse and the whale disappeared, I yelled to stop and go dead, this was it the closest I have ever been to it, is it going to happen. Sitting in my front bowe chair with nerves of a general waiting 30 seconds up on the sun then it happened 50 tons of flying love breaching whale just where I wanted him to be, the sky was brilliant, my heart was racing. I shot a series of 32 images during the breach. It had happened, I had seen the Holy Grail, now the true test was this photographer ready, was his settings right, was his ISO correct for the light. as he stayed there flapping. I held my breath and started going through my images one by one, our tagalongs were watching the whale, Noe was staring at me, I looked up at him and winked, I had nailed the Holy Grail of whale photography, the focus, color, iso everything was perfect, 17 years of marine photography, dreaming of this day, this shot, this sky.It was perfect. the whale dove and was gone, I said to Noe to the islands. I turned my chair looking straight ahead and cried, giving thanks for this opportunity and to have accomplished this challenge. Please enjoy the Holy Grail.
