I first heard of Angelina Weld Grimké (1880-1958) while researching for The Intimacy Journal on poets.org. She was a journalist, teacher, playwright, and poet, and an influential figure in the Harlem Renaissance, but much of Grimké’s intimate poetry remained unpublished during her lifetime. Why? Well, works like this week’s featured poem from the 1920s, “Evanescence,” were about same-s*x relationships. She lived in a time where being q***r was culturally unacceptable. “You are like thin, white petals falling and floating down upon the white, stilled hushing of my soul.” 🤍
This is how Angelina Weld Grimké (1880-1958) described desire in her poem “Evanescence,” which was written during the Harlem Renaissance when same-s*x relationships were culturally forbidden.
Grimké was a Black q***r poet, playwright, journalist, and teacher born in Boston. She was the great-niece of abolitionists Sarah and Angelina Grimké, carrying on her family’s legacy of speaking truth to power.
Yet much of her most intimate poetry remained unpublished during her lifetime. These love poems, addressed to women, were too dangerous to share publicly in 1920s America.
Today, nearly 70 years after her death, we can finally witness the full breadth of her art, including this tender meditation on love that brings us right into her experience as if we are there ourselves.
A century later, this is the power of women’s voices, especially those that were silenced.

It's been one year since I became an author! Here is my advice for brand-new baby authors and my former self:

1. After pushing “publish” you’re going to feel depressed for a while. You will feel confused. So, go ahead and start something new because that's all you can do.

2. If you want to write another novel, don’t squash that feeling and try to write what you think you “should” be writing. Write the story you want to write, and all your creative energy will happen simultaneously. Stay attuned to which projects you want to do. They will supercharge you with momentum.

3. You will want to fire yourself as your marketer many times. But half of being bad at stuff means accepting where you are without being mean to yourself. Look for ways to make the work more enjoyable. Enjoying things is about internal work, not external work.

4. You will not reach your goal of selling 10,000 copies of your book in your first year. A year after publishing your book, you will run an A/B test on the book cover that you should’ve done over a year ago. Like in the poem "Maximus, to himself" by Charles Olsen, you will have to learn the simplest things last. And that's okay.

5. Once you start competing with yourself, you will enter a completely different league. Reflecting on this one year later, you will still be writing. That is all that matters.

That’s it for now! I'll be back with more exciting updates soon, as I am working on a third book! Lol.

Love,

Tash

🔥 New Podcast Episode 🔥 All the news about P Diddy and Cassie made me realize that the topic of abusive relationships is a tough one, but right now time is of the essence.
It was an honor to interview forensic psychologist Dr. Tarra Bates-Duford () about her very important work as a therapist helping survivors of abusive relationships and trauma. I’ve summarized her tips and findings from what she shared in a writeup of our conversation, “How to Help Someone in an Abusive Relationship,” on the Misseducated Substack.
If you learn something from reading this post, please share it widely! You never know who needs to hear this, and who you might help.
Thank you all for trusting me to do this work 🙏

I survived two days of trolls, and I’m still writing! Thank you to every friend in Mexico I reached out to for support. You know who you are! I’m so grateful! 🥰

Then I watched a beautiful reel today. It said: if you get trolled, it’s a them problem. It’s them that needs to change. Well, I’m going to take that advice, go have another cup of Earl Grey tea and chill the f**k out 😂

Read about it, or don’t, in my latest piece on the Misseducated Substack: A Series of Unfortunate Events. Or you can listen along to my bubbly voice describing how I need to toughen up and develop a thicker skin, lol.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Love you,

Tash

I'm pretty embarrassed to be sharing this post today, but it turns out that I'm not the only one going through a bout of celibacy.

In our culture that focuses so much on people's bodies and what those bodies are doing to other people's bodies, I've found that there is joy in taking a break and not doing anything with anyone, even if that break was a total accident.

I hope it resonates!

I’m SUPER excited to share my first podcast episode of the year for Misseducated: Tackling Unexplained Infertility, with Dr. Amy Beckley, Founder and CEO of .

After experiencing 7 miscarriages, Dr. Amy was diagnosed with “unexplained infertility”, just like 30% of couples who are struggling to get and stay pregnant. She could have given up. Instead, she dug into the research herself, and uncovered some of the real causes beneath this catch-all diagnosis. Her company, Proov, was born. Proov offers simple, at-home urine tests that measure hormones and fertility. The coolest part? Dr. Amy and her co-founder crowdfunded the products themselves! On Indiegogo!

If you know a couple who is trying to get and stay pregnant, consider sharing the episode with them! You may well just save them $40,000 on an IVF cycle.
