Annette Crosbie is a much-loved Scottish actress, best known for her warm yet sharp performances across film and television. Born in 1934, she has enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades, with standout roles that have made her a familiar face to generations of viewers.

She won two BAFTA TV Awards for Edward the Seventh (1975) and The Slipper and the Rose (1976), but she’s perhaps most fondly remembered for her role as Margaret Meldrew in the hit BBC sitcom One Foot in the Grave (1990–2000), where her deadpan wit perfectly balanced Richard Wilson’s grumpy Victor.

Beyond comedy, Crosbie has also shone in dramatic roles, appearing in productions like Calendar Girls (2003), The Pope Must Die (1991), and numerous stage performances. Her ability to move seamlessly between humour and heartfelt drama has cemented her reputation as one of Britain’s finest character actresses.

The veteran actress believes there has been a noticeable decline in the quality of humour on television today. Routledge, who has spent decades perfecting her craft, feels that much of today’s comedy lacks the wit and sharpness of earlier eras. She suggests that classic sitcoms had stronger writing and character-driven humour that has stood the test of time. Fans agree that if anyone can make such a judgment, it’s her.

Despite his immense talent, TV bosses often deemed his productions “too expensive,” limiting how often audiences saw his brilliance. Fans argue he deserved far more airtime, especially given the millions now spent on football punditry or talk shows. Baxter’s sketches, rich in costumes, characters and wit, remain timeless classics. His legacy highlights both the artistry of true comedy and the changing values of television investment

Two decades on, Little Britain is sparking fresh debate as viewers look back at its once-beloved sketches. The hit BBC series, fronted by David Walliams and Matt Lucas, was a ratings juggernaut in the early 2000s. But many of its jokes — from exaggerated stereotypes to offensive caricatures — would face huge backlash if aired today. Social media is awash with people asking how it ever made it to primetime TV. The show remains a cultural flashpoint, reflecting how comedy tastes and sensitivities have shifted in 20 years
