At 57, I’ve learned that if you’re going to spend the day doing manual labor in the garden, you might as well get a tan while you’re at it.

Today’s Semi-Wild project: clear out the old grow beds and get them ready for the fall garden.

We have more tools than ever to make life faster, easier and more efficient. And I’m all for them. But maybe efficiency isn’t the goal for every part of life. Some things are worth the time they take.

Every year, right around the end of July, I notice the first quiet signs that summer is beginning to fade.
The shadows stretch a little farther. The midday sun loses a bit of its bright yellow glow. It happens weeks before the first Halloween decorations show up, but when you spend a lot of time outdoors, you can’t help but notice.
I love fall, but I’m never quite ready to say goodbye to summer.

The older we get, the more we realize it’s not about doing more.
It’s about designing a life that asks less of you every day.
This project won’t change our lives overnight. But it eliminates one more repetitive chore, saves a little time, and preserves a little energy.
Those small improvements add up.
That’s become our goal—not chasing efficiency for its own sake, but building simple systems that give us more time for the things that matter.

Thirty years ago today, Susan and I eloped. No big wedding. No elaborate plans. Just a promise.
Life doesn’t stop for anniversaries. Today included appointments, unexpected Airbnb repairs, and we’ll probably celebrate with sushi.
I’ve learned that’s what a long marriage actually looks like. Not perfect anniversaries. Just thousands of ordinary days where you keep choosing each other.
Happy 30th Anniversary, Susan. Thanks for choosing us, every single day. ❤️

I used to think getting away was the reward.
Sitting in the airport this week, paying $6 for a tiny bag of Chex Mix (and watching every little comfort come with another price tag), I realized something.
Maybe this isn’t really about airports.
Maybe it’s about what we value as we get older.
I’m finding myself spending less time dreaming about the next trip and more time appreciating the life waiting for me at home.

I wasn’t prepared for this part of getting older. Not the gray hair or the sore joints.
No one tells you that one day the person you feel like...and the person you see...won’t be the same.
And you’ll still expect them to be.

Nature has a way of reminding us that endings aren’t always failures. Sometimes a season just runs its course, making room for what’s next. I’ve been learning that lesson myself. What season of your life taught you the most?
