Mount Singai is often highlighted for its spiritual significance, especially as a Catholic pilgrimage site. But in doing so, we risk overlooking its identity as the ancestral homeland of the Bisingai people. This mountain was once home to early longhouse settlements, deeply tied to the land through adat, traditional beliefs, and communal living. These ancestral roots form the foundation of Bisingai identity and deserve equal recognition in any narrative about Mount Singai.
While we honour the legacy of the missionaries on Mount Singai, we must not forget that the ancestral roots, adat, and early Bisingai settlements were there long before the arrival of missionaries, hence shaping the mountain’s story from the very beginning.
