Penang Arts Council - PAC

Penang Arts Council - PAC Penang Arts Council (PAC) is a non-profit, non-political organization working to promote the arts Watch this space for updates and see you soon!

After a long hiatus, the Penang Arts Council or PAC is back in action! Established in 1954, PAC is one of Penangโ€™s earliest associations dedicated to promoting and advancing the arts in Penang. Ever since then, PAC has come a long way, from staging the production of traditional music and dance to pop genres. We were also privileged to receive support from the public and companies such as Texchem G

roup of Companies and YTL in producing opera, a rarity in the region. Some of the operas that weโ€™ve staged included A Grand Night of Opera (1989), Carmen (1997 and 2004), Die Fledermaus (1994), The Merry Widow (1996), The Land of Smiles (1999), Madame Butterfly (2002) and Turandot (2003). We are rejuvenating PAC with an objective to be inclusive of all performing, visual and other art forms in Penang, and to reach out to more people. We look forward to working with individuals and organizations to raise the standards of arts in Penang.

Join us for the Opening Reception of ๐’๐’†๐’ˆ๐’‚๐’“๐’‚๐’Œ๐’– ๐™„๐™„: A Collectorsโ€™ Show by Bingley Sim and Ima Norbinsha.

๐Ÿ—“ Date: 9th of August 2025, Saturday
๐Ÿ•’ Time: 8:00pm onwards
๐Ÿ“ Venue: Hin Bus Depot Exhibition Space
๐˜ˆ๐˜ญ๐˜ญ ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ.

Officiation by YB Puan Syerleena Abdul Rashid, Member of Parliament for Bukit Bendera.

Building on the groundwork established by the inaugural negaraku exhibition a year earlier, which set the stage for the examination of visual articulations of nationhood, ๐’๐’†๐’ˆ๐’‚๐’“๐’‚๐’Œ๐’– ๐™„๐™„ advances this inquiry by accentuating the multiplicity of subjectivities that constitute Malaysiaโ€™s social composition. Central to its curatorial orientation this year is an emphasis on liminal identities: citizens, migrants, and those who inhabit the interstices of official categories, whose lived experiences are often marginalised or obscured within dominant nationalist discourses. Rather than reaffirming singular or essentialist definitions of Malaysian-ness, the exhibition frames identity as fluid, contested, and relational, continually shaped by negotiation, exclusion, and belonging.

Through its curatorial framing, the exhibition reopens the question of belonging, attending to the conditions under which it is shaped and the subjects to whom it is afforded or withheld. It asks us to look again at the faces and stories that shape the life of this country, and to imagine a Malaysia expansive enough to hold all its people, however they arrived here and however they find home.

Save the date! And, weโ€™re looking forward to welcoming you next weekend for the opening !
