-English version below-

🇹🇱1162km Timor-Leste Motorcycle Adventure

Geographically,
Timor-Leste has always been part of Southeast Asia.
But it was only after officially joining ASEAN last year
that I finally saw the opportunity to explore it by motorcycle.

There isn’t much information online,
and many places on Google Maps have little to no photos or useful references.
So for this trip,
we only had a rough direction in mind,
setting off with a
“we’ll figure it out along the way” mindset.

In reality,
many roads, bridges, restaurants, fuel stations and accommodations
are still underdeveloped.

Throughout the journey,
we rode through countless unpaved roads,
potholes, landslides, construction zones,
river crossings, and mountain passes.
And when it rained,
everything became twice as challenging.

For ten days,
we were constantly changing routes and adjusting plans.
In the end,
we completed less than half of what we originally planned —
but our hearts felt completely full and satisfied.

In this raw and unpolished land,
many locals recognized the Malaysian flag on us.
Strangers — young or old —
would come up and talk to us warmly.

Some even shared how Malaysia
had supported Timor-Leste
from its struggle for independence
to its development today.

Timor-Leste is a place
that makes me want to return again someday.

I truly hope this young nation
continues to grow and prosper.

🌟 Highlights 🌟
- A raw and pure country
- 300km++ of unpaved / off-road riding
- River crossings during rainy season

🇹🇱The off-road so rough till luggage rack dislocated!

Timor-Leste ridelog 10

After spending a night at Tutuala Beach,
when about to leave the next morning
I discovered that the screws on both sides of the rear luggage rack had completely fallen off.
Most likely shaken loose by yesterday’s 40km of rough off-road riding.
The homestay owner brought out a metal wire,
trying to see if the two bars could be tied together.
Then I suddenly remembered — cable ties.
So the few strong guys,
using three cable ties on each side.
A few quick pulls,
and the problem was solved.

With cable ties in hand,
you can fix things anywhere in the world.

And these six cable ties
actually held up for several more days,
until I finally stopped at a roadside workshop
to properly repair the rack and chain.

🇹🇱Riding to the most remote eastern tip of Timor Leste

Timor-Leste ridelog 9

On the third day,
we rode to the remote beach of Tutuala,
at the eastern edge of Timor-Leste.

The 40km stretch starting from Fuiloro
was filled with every kind of unpaved road imaginable.
The potholes were so endless,
it looked like a giant honeycomb.

It took us more than one and a half hours
just to finally arrive.

The beach itself is about 8km away
from the nearest village, Tutuala.

There are only two guesthouses.
No shops.
No restaurants.

Other than the guesthousea owners
and four boatmen/fishermen from Tutuala,
we were the only outsiders there.

For one night,
we had the entire beach to ourselves,
staying in a simple bamboo hut by the sea.

And it rained the whole night
My mind was disturbed
As I know the same way out the next day
Will definitely be challenging!

🇹🇱It's not easy to go to a beach

Timor-Leste ridelog 8

Many places marked on the map in Timor-Leste have little to no photos, reviews, or useful information on Google Maps.

The country’s tourism infrastructure can’t really be compared to other Southeast Asian countries.
We need to be mentally prepared for unexpected challenges along the way.

We found a beach on the map, and the navigation showed a route that looked like only 4km and 15 minutes away.

In reality, it took us nearly an hour.
Because the entire route turned out to be off-road, crossing several rivers and streams along the way. Most of the time was spent checking the water depth before crossing 😂

I decided to contribute more photos and information to places in Timor-Leste on Google Maps, so future travelers can have better references
including the hotels and guesthouses we stayed at, as well as the restaurants and cafés we visited.

At the same time, I realized the cows buffalos and goats in Timor-Leste live quite a happy life.
Not only do they roam freely across grasslands, they even get to chill by the beach and enjoy the sea breeze too~

Outside the more economically active and developed northern areas,
where petrol stations are relatively dense,
fuel stations across the east, south, and central regions
are not evenly distributed.

In these slower-developing areas,
road conditions are rough,
and some river crossings still have no bridges.
For motorcycles with small fuel tanks,
it’s important to keep an eye on fuel consumption.

if can’t find a petrol station,
We’ll buy bottled fuel
from roadside instead.

Tetum

Tetum
Peixe

🇹🇱Timorese can speak more than 3 languages

Timor-Leste ridelog 6

The most commonly used language in Timor-Leste is Tetum,
and it is taught as a compulsory subject in school.

Timor-Leste was under Portuguese colonial rule for more than 400 years,
Portuguese became one of the country’s official languages
and is also taught in schools.
English is taught in schools as well.
Bahasa Indonesia, many locals picked it up from watching Indonesian TV programs growing up
just like how I learned Cantonese from watching TVB dramas as a kid.

Other than English and Indonesian,
honestly, I can’t really tell whether people are speaking Portuguese or Tetum most of the time. 😅

But I do recognize words like “Obrigada” thank you
and “Peixe” fish,
(Portuguese grilled fish is really famous)
and I learned these words during my motorcycle trip in Portugal.

I can also recognize some signs on police stations and government buildings.
And the word “Escola” (school)
was something I learned while riding to Venilale.
There stands an old school built during the Portuguese colonial era.
The buildings are already worn down and crumbling with age,
yet students are still attending classes there today.

🇹🇱Bike shops more than restaurants~

Timor-Leste ridelog 5

About 80% of daily commute is by bikes,
Almost every household owns at least one bike.

Along the northern coastal districts, scooters are the most common.
But in the central and southern regions, where the roads are rough and challenging, many people ride dirt bikes like CRFs and KLXs.

Here, motorcycle repair shops seem even more common than restaurants.
On the way to the southern mountain town of Same,
I realized my chain was loosen.
We stopped at a small roadside workshop.
The owner was away,
so his teenage son, a high school student
handled the repair himself.
In just a few minutes, he fixed it and even lubricated the chains for both our bikes.

Later on, after hitting a huge rock,
the chain guard got bent badly.
So once again, in the rain,
we stopper for another roadside repair.
The mechanic simply took a screwdriver, bent it back into shape with a few quick moves…
and my bike was ready to conquer the road again.
