POV: WHY I stayed 6 YEARS in a company offering RM1.5k to RM2.5k as a DEGEEE holder (Executive Assistant role)
When I first joined, I was offered RM1.5k. Degree holder, Executive Assistant role. Honestly, kalau orang luar dengar, mesti akan cakap “kau kenapa nak accept gaji macam tu?”
But I did.
Not because I didn’t know my worth, but because I saw something more than just the salary.
My boss.
Honestly, dia ni second boss je. Takde kuasa nak naikkan gaji aku pun.
He wasn’t just a boss. Dia jenis yang really train me from zero. First time masuk kerja, I was clueless. Banyak benda tak tahu, banyak buat silap. Tapi dia tak humiliate, tak marah sembarangan. Dia explain satu-satu, sampai aku betul-betul faham.
He even sent me for trainings, expose me to real working environment, real responsibilities. Slowly I grew from just “assistant” to someone who actually understands how things run.
Year by year, my salary went from RM1.5k to RM2.5k. Not fast, not impressive on paper. Tapi skill aku naik jauh. Confidence aku pun lain.
People always ask, “6 years kau tak rasa rugi ke?”
Honestly, no.
I didn’t waste 6 years. I learned, I got trained, I built my foundation there.
Lepas dia pergi (pencen), aku duduk lama fikir.
Aku sedar satu benda.
Aku tak stay sebab company tu.
Aku stay sebab dia.
Tak lama lepas tu, aku pun buat keputusan. Aku berhenti.
Bukan sebab benci, tapi sebab orang yang buat aku stay dah tak ada.
Dan masa aku keluar tu, aku cuma fikir satu je.
Terima kasih sebab pernah percaya pada aku, masa aku sendiri tak yakin pada diri sendiri.
Then I moved to my second job.
From RM2.5k to RM4.5k basic. Almost 80% increment. That jump felt real. It showed me that what I learned before memang ada value.
And the best part, second job ni not just stop there. After probation, still got increment potential. So I feel like finally I’m in a place that really rewards performance, not just tenure.
And one thing I’ll always carry forward is this:
Don’t just see a workplace as a place to earn money. See it as a place to grow. Because the right environment, the right mentor, and the right exposure will shape you into someone you didn’t even know you could become.
A good job pays your bills, but a good environment builds your future.
So yeah.
I didn’t stay because I was stuck.
I stayed because I was growing.
And I didn’t leave because I was bitter.
I left because I was ready.
