The title “DAYUNG SAMPAN” may not be too familiar with most people, but the tune on the other hand is definitely most popular among the Chinese-speaking community. They would recognise the song as 《甜蜜蜜》, made famous by Teresa Teng 邓丽君.

Here, this song is chosen to be the opening act of “Irama Nostalgia” showcase concert in Jewel Piano Lounge, Baba House Malacca.

Sound Atelier had the privilege of hosting a showcase concert title Irama Nostalgia (Nostalgic Tunes) - Baba Nyonya Favourite Tunes at Jewel Piano Lounge, Baba House Malacca during the Merdeka Weekend.

We prepared a series of delightful and popular Malayan folk tunes, eg Burung Kakak Tua, Geylang Si-Paku Geylang, Chan Mali Chan etc. Additionally there were also some Chinese tunes written during the Merdeka era eg 榴莲飘香，槟城艳. And let’s not forget the evergreat maestro P. Ramlee’s Engkau Laksana Bulan & Getaran Jiwa.

Though it was only a small intimate setting, the energy and passion from both the stage and floor was of utmost encouraging. Before we can even end the show, many guests were calling us back for Mid-Autumn Festival in a month’s time 😄😄

A recent work undertaken by Sound Atelier Studio, a short musical work "My Earthling Son" from "Jaylen's Trials" series.

"Jaylen's Trials" speaks of a young boy, Jaylen, who is born of a human father and forest nymph mother. In Song 6 "My Earthling Son", the story centers on the Forest Nymph reluctantly giving her baby boy to his human father, when her home the forest faces an impending destruction.

“2003 The Museum Years” is the fifth and final instalment in “The Grandfather’s Clock” series. It follows the life of the clock which witness a century of changes in the house it was placed in.

The 5-part story is written and composed by a long-time client, Mr Lim. He writes plenty of stories, some autobiographies, some fantasy. He also composes wonderful music to go with each of these stories. Since discovering Sound Atelier Studio, Mr Lim has consistently commissioned the studio to produced the songs that has written. From around 2022/23, he goes a step further, commissioning the studio to produce visuals to complement the songs, therefore producing short films that can be enjoyed by the public in YouTube.

All the visuals in these songs are generated by AI.

1983 The Sunset Years is the fourth installment from "My Grandfather's Clock" series.

Foreword from the composer, Mr Lim:

"The clock is the story-teller. Notice how the Clock chimes in relation to the emotional situation of the story.

When the sun sets, the day comes to an end. Life has its beginning and its end. As the sun sets, it would be a good time for reflections. This would be a good time to prepare to close all emotional doors - love & hate, success & failure, friends & enemies. When the sun sets, these emotions are no longer relevant.

I have written this music "The Sunset Years" as a journey, the final leg of life. There are no surprises, no shocks and no bumpy rides. Just an even flow of waters to the sea.

Lastly, no one can escape realities of life."

"1963 - The Swinging Years" is the 3rd of the 5-part series of "The Grandfather's Clock", and by far the most joyous and merry. It speaks of a time of abundance and plentiful, of youth and vigour - a stark contrast to the death and desolute of "1943 - The War Years".

The music showcases some elements of Malaysian folk culture, intertwining with orchestral strings and woodwinds.

Again, AI were used to generate all the visuals here. The scene of beachside outing, frolicking at the park and even marathon crowds - all these are AI, surely yet frighteningly real.

"1943 - The War Years" is the second part of the 5-part series of "The Grandfather's Clock". However, it was the first that has its storyline done extensively using AI generated visuals.

Though AI is marvellous in getting high-quality visuals produced quickly, currently it is still far from dependable in producing historically culturally accurate materials. For example, AI could not accurately generate pictures of Japanese soldiers in the correct uniforms, nor can it understand the correct weapons that these soldiers would carry during the year 1943.

Nonetheless, I foresee this shortcoming will be slowly but surely be cut back, as AI gets more powerful and intelligent in the future.

“The Grandfather’s Clock” is a 5-part story about an old tower clock that witnesses the changes that happened in a house, set in the backdrop of Malaya from 1920s until the turn of the 20th century.

The first part “1923 THE EARLY YEARS” was just completed recently, now available to watch on YouTube.

Again, this is another attempt at using AI to generate the relevant visuals to accompany the music and story. After many years of working on producing music, it is indeed refreshing to learn a new skill and being able to apply it on enhancing sound and music.
