10,000 tourism workers will receive free safety and health training as Malaysia prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026.

The initiative, led by the Human Resources Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, aims to strengthen safety standards across the tourism sector as the country targets around 47 million international arrivals.

The one-day Safety Induction for Tourism Industry (SITI) programme will be implemented through National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and is open to tour guides, hotel staff, drivers, caterers, and other tourism workers. Participants will receive a digital safety passport with 24-hour insurance coverage valid for two years, applicable locally and overseas.

Training will be available online and in physical sessions, with registration opening on 25 January and slots offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

As Visit Malaysia 2026 approaches, the focus is clear: service excellence must go hand in hand with uncompromising safety standards.

AI is quietly changing how airport travel really works.

Major airports are now using predictive AI to manage passenger flow, anticipate delays, and coordinate ground transport before problems even show up. The result? Fewer disruptions, faster connections, and smoother journeys especially during peak travel periods.

For transport operators and travel businesses, this isn’t just tech talk. AI is helping cut idle time, improve on-time performance, and keep passengers informed in real time. Smaller operators are also gaining ground by competing on intelligence and speed, not size.

What this really means is simple:
AI is no longer an upgrade. It’s becoming core infrastructure for airports, logistics players, and anyone involved in moving people efficiently.

As passenger numbers rise and expectations get higher, the businesses investing early in data, predictive tools, and customer communication will be the ones setting the pace.

As Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaches, the Malaysia Theme Park and Family Attractions Association (Matfa) is calling on the travel trade community to offer reasonable rates to attract and retain tourists.

✈️ Penang Eyes Over 8 Million Tourist Arrivals in 2026

Penang’s tourism momentum is set to stay strong, with over 8 million tourists expected to arrive via Penang International Airport this year.

According to Penang Tourism and Creative Economy EXCO Wong Hon Wai, the growth is driven by new direct international flights, including AirAsia services from Phuket and Spring Airlines routes from Shanghai and Guangzhou, with more routes expected from Southeast Asia, India and China.

The outlook is further boosted by Visit Malaysia 2026 and Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026, leveraging Penang’s strong medical tourism reputation and diverse visitor offerings.

Good news for travellers too. The new National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) is already operating at the departure hall and will soon be rolled out at arrivals, promising faster clearance and smoother journeys ahead of the festive travel season.

Penang is clearly gearing up for a busy year on the global tourism map.

🕋 Stranded umrah pilgrims spark new rules for travel agencies

After 36 Malaysian pilgrims were left stranded in Madinah due to an agency’s failure to provide accommodation and return flights, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture has stepped in with firm action.

Tourism Minister Tiong King Sing announced that all umrah travel agencies will now be required to provide mandatory bank guarantees. The move is meant to protect pilgrims and ensure compensation in cases of fraud, negligence, or operational failure.

The pilgrims, including elderly travellers and children, had paid RM7,600 each and were forced to rely on charitable donations to get home. The issue was flagged through the Malaysian Embassy in Riyadh, with the government later assisting in their return.

Preliminary investigations found the agency was no longer operating at its registered premises, and a report recommending licence cancellation is being finalised.

Bottom line: accountability is no longer optional. Only agencies that are professional, responsible, and operate with integrity will be allowed to continue.
