Poison Void: Call of the Void – A Blast from the Past
I first encountered Poison Void’s Call of the Void digitally, starting a review that somehow vanished into the ether. The recent announcement of a physical CD release, however, spurred me to revisit this brutal EP and finally complete my thoughts. While Poison Void is a relatively new band, the musicianship speaks volumes; these aren't newcomers to the metal scene. Their sound is a potent cocktail of raw, unadulterated death metal, a sonic throwback to the unvarnished aggression of the 90s. Forget atmospheric subtleties or melodic detours; this is pure, unfiltered, evil-sounding death metal. The kind that dominated the scene before melodic death metal became the norm.
The five-track EP is a relentless assault. Each song is a furious barrage of blast beats, guttural vocals, and razor-sharp riffs. The band masterfully captures that classic 90s death metal sound, a sound that prioritized speed, ferocity, and darkness above all else. The production is intentionally raw, adding to the overall sense of unbridled energy and chaos. It's a sound that will resonate deeply with those who lived through the 90s metal scene.
A standout is the inclusion of a classic, emotionally resonant instrumental track. This unexpected addition provides a moment of reflection amidst the sonic carnage, showcasing the band's ability to craft both brutal aggression and melancholic atmosphere. It's a testament to their musicianship and a welcome surprise within the EP's otherwise relentless pace.
This is not for the casual listener. Call of the Void demands your full attention and unleashes a wave of pure, unadulterated death metal fury. If you crave a nostalgic trip back to the raw energy of 90s death metal, look no further. The physical release is a welcome opportunity to own a piece of this brutal, timeless sound. Highly recommended.
