“Breaking an Ajarn’s rules” means violating the rules, restrictions, or promises that the Ajarn has established. Whether it is done intentionally or unintentionally, it is still considered “wronging one’s Ajarn” or breaking a vow made to one’s Ajarn. In ancient beliefs, a person who does this is called “a person afflicted by the curse of the earth spirit.”
A person who breaks the rules of their Ajarn, or is afflicted by this condition, is believed to suffer from the power of the Ajarn’s spiritual force, causing various hardships in life according to the strength of the curse, such as:
1. Problems in life
They may experience suffering continuously. When one problem ends, another problem appears, causing constant worry and distress.
2. Money and fortune
Even if they have money or good luck, it disappears. No matter how hard they work to earn money, what they gain will be spent on solving various problems.
3. Illness and health problems
People in the household or the person they love most may repeatedly become sick. One person gets better, then another becomes ill.
4. Problems with the lower body
The body from the waist down may develop problems because the Ajarn, or the foundation of one’s life, is believed to affect the parts that allow a person to stand. They may experience leg pain, knee pain, especially on Buddhist holy days. Red or purple marks may appear on the body and cannot be cured easily.
5. If the wrongdoing involves sacred tattoos (Sak Yant)
The tattoos that once provided blessings and protection may, according to this belief, transform into “asura” or demonic forces that harm the owner. They may cause carelessness, accidents, and continuous injuries—always having wounds or misfortunes happening one after another.
6. Family problems
Family members may argue or feel resentment toward each other constantly. Whenever things seem to improve, another problem appears, preventing true happiness.
Breaking a vow related to spiritual practices, especially in the path of magic, Brahmin traditions, or hermit (Ruesi) practices, is believed by some to have severe consequences, such as mental disturbance, disability, or even death in serious cases.
The next question is: If someone has broken an Ajarn’s rules, how can it be corrected?
First, one must perform a ritual of apology and ask for forgiveness. If the Ajarn is still alive, one should prepare flowers, incense, candles, and an Ajarn offering tray, then ask forgiveness directly from that Ajarn.
If the Ajarn has passed away or is considered a spiritual being, one should prepare flowers, incense, and candles and ask forgiveness in front of the Ajarn’s image or representation.
The result depends on the intention behind the action—whether the wrongdoing happened accidentally due to ignorance, or whether the person knowingly and intentionally broke the Ajarn’s rules.
When a disciple truly regrets their actions and performs a ceremony to apologize, the outcome is believed to be:
An Ajarn is like a second parent to a disciple. If a disciple makes a mistake, they should recognize it, repent, and stop the wrong action. Every Ajarn will forgive a disciple who sincerely regrets their mistake and is willing to improve themselves and live a better life.
If the mistake was accidental, there may be no consequences. But if someone knowingly and intentionally broke the Ajarn’s rules, the matter is considered more serious. However, after sincerely asking for forgiveness, the Ajarn will forgive a disciple who truly repents.”
