Be guided by Holy Spirit, media practitioners told

Catholic media practitioners should always allow themselves to be inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit, Cardinal Sebastian Francis said.

Describing the Holy Spirit as the ‘Ultimate Influencer’, the Malaysian prelate said Catholic media practitioners should not merely rely on their personal beliefs and influences in carrying out their duties.

“As Christians, we are called to share Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit,” Cardinal Sebastian said when opening the annual general meeting and formation of the Episcopal Regional Commission for Social Communication (ERCSC) in Bandar Seri Begawan.

Purgatory as purification through love

Imagine being born blind and living into adulthood without ever having seen light and color. Then, through some miraculous operation, doctors are able to give you sight. What would you feel immediately upon opening your eyes? Wonder? Bewilderment? Ecstasy? Pain? Some combination of all of these?

We now know the answer to that question. This kind of sight-restoring operation has been done and is being done, and we now have some indication of how a person reacts upon opening his or her eyes and seeing light and color for the first time. What happens might surprise us. Here’s how J.Z. Young, an authority on brain function, describes what happens:

“The patient on opening his eyes gets little or no enjoyment; indeed, he finds the experience painful. He reports only a spinning mass of light and colors. He proves to be quite unable to pick up objects by sight, to recognize what they are, or to name them.

A green tribute in honour of Pope Francis

On a recent long weekend break, 260 volunteers from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, embarked on a mission of planting 400 trees at Taman Botani Shah Alam (TBSA), as a ‘Tribute to Pope Francis’. This was a collaborative effort between the Archdiocesan Creation Justice Ministry (CJM) and Jabatan Perhutanan Semenanjung Malaysia (JPSM).

Nature enthusiasts from different parishes in the diocese, Sunday school children, learners preparing for Confirmation and First Holy Communion, the young and the ones willing to make a difference, volunteers from other faith groups, all got together to contribute to care for ‘Our Common Home’.

As the volunteers got off their buses, keeping carpool and fuel consumption in mind, they assembled at the open car park surrounded by huge trees.

Death to new life

“Master, we should like to see a sign from you”: This was the request made by the religious leaders to Jesus. Despite His many miracles, they were looking for something different and spectacular to determine if He was truly the Messiah. Jesus refused to do as they said because He knew that they would not believe in Him, no matter what He did. Instead, He stated that the only sign He would provide was the sign of the prophet Jonah. Jonah experienced a profound transformation after being swallowed by a whale and spending three days in its belly. During that time, he came to understand his calling and mission. Eventually, he was spit out onto the...

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Hospitality

In today's first reading, Abraham welcomed three travellers into his home, showing great hospitality, not realising he was hosting God and two angels. This reflects Jesus’ teaching that how we treat others is how we treat Him (Matthew 25:40). God enters our lives through those we meet, and we are called to recognise Him in others by fostering a spirit of hospitality. It’s essential that everyone feels valued and respected, as serving others is a way to express our love for God.

Welcome Back, Fr David A Garaman! Celebrating His 49th Birthday and Return to St Mary’s Cathedral Parish

The St Mary’s Cathedral Parish in Sandakan joyfully welcomed the return of Fr David A Garaman as Parish Priest on Jul 1, 2025. A special Pot-bless Fellowship was held on Jul 15 2025, marking both his 49th birthday and his return to the parish.

The celebration was organized by the Parish Pastoral Council, together with the BECs, ministries, and various parish groups, in a beautiful show of unity and thanksgiving.

Fr David hails from Kg Tempenau, Lahad Datu, and was ordained to the priesthood on Dec 31 2010 at St Dominic’s Church, Lahad Datu, a historic moment as it marked the first priestly ordination in the Diocese of Sandakan since its establishment on Jul 16 2007.

Saturday of week 15 in Ordinary Time

Courage to do good all the time

The Pharisees began plotting how to destroy Jesus because they already harboured a deep-seated hatred for Him. No matter what He did or said, their hardened hearts would not change. In today's Gospel passage, Jesus was aware of this and chose to withdraw from the district, away from the religious authorities. Rather than attempting to justify His actions or confronting the Pharisees directly, He silently continued to focus on His mission: loving others and serving those in need.

Pilgrimage of Hope: Clergy of the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu retrace martyrs’ journey in Jubilee Year

Marking the Jubilee Year of Hope, Archbishop John Wong led the clergy of the Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu on a two-day Clergy Pilgrimage of Hope from Jun 23 to 24, retracing the footsteps of Msgr August Wachter and the Mill Hill missionaries who were martyred. This year commemorates the 80th anniversary of their disappearance and death after World War II.

The pilgrimage began with Lauds at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kota Kinabalu, where the priests, together with the Archbishop, invoked God’s grace to renew their ministry with courage and steadfastness. “God our Father, we begin our pilgrimage this Jubilee Year of Hope…

Fill us and our priestly ministry with courage amidst all the trials and difficulties,” they prayed together, united in spirit and purpose.

Memories linger 80 years after Japan chopped prisoners as logs

JOURNALIST Aimee Tsujimoto has researched war crimes committed by the Japanese Empire during the Asia-Pacific War (1931-45), focusing on the former Manchuria (now northeastern China), and compiled them into a series of three books.

The final volume of the trilogy, “The Truth about the Unit 731 ‘Shonen Corps’: 80 Years After the War” (in Japanese), was published last March. Tsujimoto emphasizes that boys aged 14 and 15 were involved in crimes by the notorious unit, which carried out various experiments on prisoners.

Unit 731, officially known as the Kwantung Army Epidemic Prevention and Water Supply Department, was a unit of the Japanese army based in Heiho, a suburb of Harbin, Manchuria.
