A smile before the challenge - an exhausting and risky hike in Kampung Lingkubang. Climbing near-vertical slopes most of the time, trekking through an old forgotten path, crossing mountain rivers, and dealing with relentless leeches, all just to assess whether the community needs an improved gravity water system to address their ongoing water scarcity.

This is the kind of effort required long before any solution takes shape - our groundwork team’s time, energy, and endless back-and-forth travel. So, if people still wondering whether we’re just volunteers, think again. No volunteer role could sustain this level of commitment for 9 years. What we all do isn’t about feeling good—it’s about creating real, lasting impact in rural communities.

Before Chinese New Year, our days were packed with - sitting down with over 30 village representatives to understand the their face.

It’s something we do almost every year, gathering insights through their presentations before heading into fieldwork and site inspections. This phase is all about filtering through the information, assessing what’s feasible, and mapping out our focus for the year ahead. A lot of brainstorming, analyzing , and mentally gearing up before stepping into the field.

Every decision starts as an idea in the city, but it takes shape in the jungle. We can’t solve problems from behind a desk—that’s why we step into the field.

Seeing the challenges and opportunities firsthand gives us the clarity to make decisions that matter for the rural communities we serve.

People often ask me, “Are you the one running charity work?” And each time, I reply, “Our work is so much more than charity.” Because while handing out goods might provide temporary relief, it doesn’t begin to touch the deeper challenges rural communities face every day.

Instead, we love to focus on the bigger picture 🖼 - address the root causes of the problems, not just the symptoms. Rural communities often face unique challenges—whether it’s limited access to resources, the impact of poverty, geographical or environmental barriers. These issues can’t be solved by simply giving; they require thoughtful, long-term strategies.

We work alongside the people to take action on their specific issues, secure the resources they need, and build capacity within their own communities. This approach empowers them to lead their own change, finding solutions that work for the long run—not just a quick fix🔧

But what we really want is for people to understand how vital sustainability is —without playing on sympathy or fostering a sense of dependency where people keep relying on external assistance. Shifting this mindset is the key to overcoming rural poverty. When we solve one problem, we aim to open the door to even more opportunities—helping communities create an environment where they can thrive on their own. That’s the vision that drives us every day.

Because in the end, it’s not about charity or how good we look for helping others—not for the name, not for the pride. It’s about empowering people to build the future they deserve equally—one rooted in self-sufficiency and sustainability for themselves and future generations💪

Ever wondered what's a Sustainable Civil Organization (SCO)?

You might know about NGOs, non-profits, or social enterprises, but SCO is still not widely known in this field. For the last 9 years, I've had the privilege of building a SCO from scratch, continuously refining our management practices and ex*****on strategies along the way.

From clean water initiatives to sustainable farming, education, and even environmental to begin experimenting with transforming small-scale urban waste into sustainable feed for rural communities, our journey has been anything but ordinary.

We’ve gone beyond traditional charity work, embedding into our mission to ensure we can track the measurable impact of our work in rural areas.

A Sustainable Civil Organization isn't just about doing good; it's about pursuing long-term economic sustainability, social impact, and environmental stewardship. Every project we take on is aimed to leave a sustainable, positive impact on the communities we serve while also avoiding depleting resources or harming the environment.

9 years have flown by since I first took this step at the age of 25. Despite the mental hustle, I've found joy in knowing that every step forward makes a lasting difference.

Every year, our team undertakes at least 1 to 2 bridge projects, and let’s be real - they’re financially demanding (dompet sakit tau😂) due to the substantial procurement of wood planks to replace damaged cross path sections, depending on the bridge’s length and extent of damage.

This year, a kawan from Kampung Sayap pitched us an innovative idea - using used tires as an alternative to wood planks. While this presents a potential solution, the process is time consuming and labor intensive - from gathering old tires from town, arranging transportation, to cutting them before installing it on the bridge with purlins for support.

However, despite the labor-intensity, our efforts not only restore the bridge to fulfill the community’s needs but also address environmental issues. Without redefining their purpose, all the used tires will end up in landfills. Hence, we're killing two birds with one stone here!

Fingers crossed that this bridge will stick around for at least a century :) Nothing, not even heavy rain or scorching sun, should be able to take it down.

We learned from the villagers to smile even during difficult times. I hope our efforts are valuable and that we can make a difference in this project. It's hard for me to imagine how over 1,000 villagers have struggled with getting enough gravity water for more than 30 years.

Big thanks to Tatler Asia for featuring me and Hopes Malaysia! Back when I was still cruising in my Myvi, enduring four-hour drives on bumpy gravel roads each trip all the ways to kampungs, wading through dirty mud and cow dung, I never expected any kind of achievement after seven long years. But hey, it's all credit to the amazing teamwork and partners that Hopes Malaysia has been able to make significant strides forward!
