Steamed fish is served at Chinese New Year because serving a whole fish symbolizes completeness, family unity, and good luck. 🧧
CANTONESE STYLE STEAMED FISH
Ingredients
1 whole fish (I used black grouper)
2–3 slices ginger
2 green onions (plus extra for garnish)
2 tbsp neutral oil
For the Chinese-Style Soy Sauce:
2 tbsp light soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1–2 cloves garlic, chopped
1 tsp sesame oil
1 tbsp Shaoxing (cooking) wine
Pinch of sugar (to taste)
A few drops liquid seasoning (optional)
Steps
1️⃣ Place ginger and some green onion inside and under the fish.
2️⃣ Steam over high heat for 8–12 minutes, until the fish flakes easily.
3️⃣ Mix all the sauce ingredients in a small bowl.
4️⃣ Pour off excess liquid from the steamed fish.
5️⃣ Spoon the sauce over the fish and top with fresh green onions.
6️⃣ Heat oil until just smoking, then pour over the top to release the aroma 🔥
Serve immediately with hot steamed rice.
