Pulau Bidong — Where the Vietnamese Boat People Found Refuge.

The Vietnam War forced thousands of Vietnamese to flee their homeland escaping by sea in small fragile boats, risking storms, starvation and pirates in search of freedom.

Many never made it.
Countless lives were lost to the sea. Boats capsized in storms, families torn apart and dreams swallowed by the waves.

Some were rescued by kind hearted Malaysian fishermen, local Malaysian people and the Malaysian authorities. Their long desperate journey finally ending on the shores of Pulau Bidong.

Off the coast of Terengganu, Malaysia, this small island became a refuge for those who survived. A place where broken lives were slowly rebuilt.

With the support of Malaysia, UNHCR and humanitarian groups, it became a sanctuary where hope was given another chance to live.

Here they built houses, temples, chapel, clinic and school. A fragile community born from despair but sustained by faith.

Today, Pulau Bidong stands silent.
Its ruins and rusted boats whisper stories of loss and love, compassion, courage and the will to survive.
