The Fourth won a Digital Media Award (Asia) for The Last Harvest!

Our investigative documentary series on the mass eviction of generational farmers won for Best Use of Video, in the small/medium media category.

THE LAST HARVEST, our documentary series on the farmer evictions in Perak due to development projects, made it to the longlist in the Innovative Storytelling category. Watch the full series on our IG profile.

The Awards celebrate outstanding journalism and documentary filmmaking from the Global South. This year, there were 559 entries from over 100 countries.

The Fourth co-founder Ian Yee dedicated the Merdeka Award win to all the brave investigative journalists he’s worked with at The Fourth and R.AGE.

“Investigative journalists don’t often get recognised for their work, despite the incredibly courageous and critical work they do.

“So I want to take this opportunity to celebrate our amazing team at The Fourth. It has been a challenging journey, but i know they’re going to keep on pushing to defend truth and justice,” said Ian.

Ian and the co-founders of The Fourth first worked together at R.AGE, where their hard-hitting investigative documentaries and public action campaigns emboldened a generation of youth to push for change.

Their “Predator In My Phone” exposé on child sexual predators, for example, led to new laws against child sexual crimes in Malaysia. Another undercover investigation, “Student/Trafficked”, exposed a human trafficking syndicate and prevented thousands of young people being coerced into forced labour.

Today, they continue their work as independent journalists with The Fourth, where they’ve also trained hundreds of aspiring journalists and impact content creators under our Fourth Academy.

Activist and politician Dr. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj is in a race against time to prevent hundreds of farmers from being forcefully evicted by property developers and state GLCs.

In the nearly two decades he has worked with the farmers, he has come across numerous questionable land deals. But with state governments not legally required to reveal details when it sells off land, farmers and activists face an uphill task holding those involved accountable.

Follow our page to watch the full series and find out if the farmers’ campaign to save their farms is successful.

▶️ SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN:

1. Tag Prime Minister and demand that the government and designate it as permanent farmland.

2. ⁠Tag your local MPs and ADUNs and demand that they make state land deals fully transparent. Right now, states can conduct land deals with almost zero accountability.

▶️ THE LAST HARVEST is a documentary series about the forced evictions of food producing communities in Malaysia, often to make way for private developers and state government projects.

It follows the farmers’ desperate efforts to push back against the evictions before their farms are permanently destroyed, as well as the activists’ tireless campaign for the Malaysian Parliament to intervene.
