OCBC KL CAR-FREE MORNING BACK IN FULL SWING FROM SUNDAY, 17 JULY WITH OCBC BANK RETURNING AS TITLE SPONSOR - Weekly, instead of twice-monthly, sessions now.

Kuala Lumpur, 7 July 2022 – After several months of pilot resumption testing, the highly popular OCBC KL Car-Free Morning resumes in earnest on Sunday, 17 July 2022 with long-time title sponsor OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad (OCBC Bank) returning to the role it has played since the start of the event seven years ago.

To add to the celebratory note, the highly anticipated platform in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city centre will now no longer be held twice monthly but weekly. This means every Sunday is now an OCBC KL Car-Free Morning Sunday.

The event will continue to be conducted under certain standard operating procedures (SOPs) but without limit to the number of participants. It will continue to feature the cherished 7-kilometre stretch of closed road for the public to walk, run, skate or cycle along for two hours from 7am to 9am on the first and third Sundays. The remaining Sundays will feature a slightly shorter 5km route for the time being.

OCBC Bank is sweetening things by donating 100 brand new bicycles valued at RM40,000 for cyclists to use on a complimentary basis each Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference to announce the formal resumption, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur Datuk Seri Haji Mahadi bin Che Ngah said the iconic event is part of KL City Hall’s relentless drive to protect the environment, promote a healthier Malaysia and drive tourism.

“I am delighted to officially announce that OCBC KL Car-Free Morning can now be a weekly item on the agenda of our city’s health enthusiasts. In line with this, we welcome back OCBC Bank as the returning title sponsor. OCBC Bank has had a long association with both the car-free morning and cycling and has been well known since 2011 for popular events such as OCBC Cycle Malaysia and subsequently OCBC Cycle Kuala Lumpur. It is good to be in partnership with a returning corporate partner that is committed to the cause and has been with us since 2015,” he said.

Datuk Seri Mahadi added that OCBC Bank’s commitment to the long-term success of the event was evident also through the provision of the fresh set of 100 bicycles on top of the 140 bicycles they had contributed a few years ago but which are deemed no longer roadworthy due to wear and tear.

Commenting on the decision to resume its title sponsorship, OCBC Bank Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Ong Eng Bin said the Bank had been awaiting the opportunity to partner again with KL City Hall in OCBC KL Car-Free Morning to jointly promote the protection of the environment and a healthy lifestyle.

“We are looking forward to enabling more sustainability-linked efforts through OCBC KL Car-Free Morning which, moving forward, will strive to create further health and environment related opportunities for everyone to participate in. We are hoping to add recycling and go-green initiatives which all participants can contribute to as well.

“We are pleased to see from the pilot runs that cycling – a mainstay of OCBC Bank – remains the most popular activity at OCBC KL Car-Free Morning, accounting for about half of what people come to the event to do. We encourage participants to take full advantage of the fresh set of 100 bicycles that we are availing for them to use on a complimentary basis during the event. I would like to put on record our thanks to the honourable Mayor of Kuala Lumpur for inviting us to continue in a journey that we began with KL City Hall some seven years ago,” he said.

Dato’ Ong added that the Bank will work with the organisers to put together more activities as the event progresses so that those who participate will have an even more enjoyable experience each time.

Also present at the event were CEO of OCBC Al-Amin Bank Berhad Tuan Syed Abdull Aziz Syed Kechik, Chairman of the OCBC KL Car-Free Morning Implementation Committee Datuk Naim Mohamad and Chairman of event organiser Multigreen Events Sdn Bhd Dato’ Rosle Jaamat.

Datuk Naim said OCBC KL Car Free Morning typically attracted an average of about four thousand people from all walks of life each time it was held before the pandemic, and that they are looking to increase the numbers as the event progresses.

“Although there will be no session this Sunday due to Hari Raya Haji, we look forward to seeing people of all walks of life at Dataran DBKL on Sunday, 17 July and every Sunday following that,” he added.

"We are still under the Recovery Movement Control Order (to combat Covid-19) which is due to end on Aug 31.

"Also, we are unsure about the government's exit plan (on the pandemic) and are unable to invite foreign teams because the country's borders are yet to be reopened.

"Sponsors are also unsure about giving their full commitment.

"So all things considered, we do not want to take the risk by going ahead with the race (this year)," said Emir Abdul Jalal.

He said it would affect the race's 2.1 status on the Union Cycling Internationale (UCI) calendar if the race attracted only local teams.

KUALA LUMPUR: The second edition of the Tour of Peninsular (ToP) has been postponed to next year due to uncertainties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

KL TRAFFIC POLICE CHIEF UNVEILS KUALA LUMPUR OCBC CYCLE 2019 ROUTE FEATURING 21KM STRETCH OF CLOSED ROADS IN THE CITY

Kuala Lumpur, 15 November 2019 – Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation chief, Assistant Superintendant Of Police YBhg Haji Zulkefly Yahya today unveiled the route for the upcoming 42km and 21km KL OCBC Cycle 2019 rides, dubbed “The City Ride” for its emphasis on enabling extended rides on closed roads amidst the capital’s most iconic city centre landmarks.

Into its fifth year, KL OCBC Cycle 2019 comes with a new 21km category (alongside the regular 42km category) and will take on an environmental theme as well this year.

At the same event, Assistant Superintendant Of Police YBhg Haji Zulkefly Yahya welcomed OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad’s role as title sponsor of KL OCBC Cycle 2019, saying it is heartening to see the annual event back for the fifth year. KL OCBC Cycle remains the only annual mass participation cycling event on closed roads in the city centre.

Other sponsors of the event include Thule, Cosmo Hotel, Royal Sporting House, 100 Plus, Quill City Mall, Warisan Outdoor, Cycling Malaysia, Banana Boat, Aftershokz, Check Hup, Yakult, N8, Aqtive and Ciclista.

Organised by Multigreen Events and supported by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), KL OCBC Cycle 2019 takes place on 24 November 2019 at Dataran Merdeka and begins at 6.30am.

Speaking at the KL OCBC Cycle 2019 route unveiling press conference today, YBhg Haji Zulkefly Yahya gave the thumbs up to the event saying all preparations were well underway to make it a safe, smooth and successful ride.

“This annual cycling event in the heart of the city has attracted a record of about 2,300 participants this time round and we are pleased to be part of this noble and healthy initiative which provides a great platform for our citizens and tourists alike. On our part, we will ensure the necessary closures are in place and that traffic remains smooth as safety is our utmost priority,” he said.

Sharing the details of the route, Datuk Naim Mohamad, Chairman of the KL OCBC Cycle 2019 Implementation Committee, said KL OCBC Cycle 2019 will flag off at Dataran Merdeka. Participants will then ride through Jalan Raja Laut, Jalan Dang Wangi, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Perak, Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Ampang, Lebuhraya Sultan Iskandar, Jalan Parlimen, Jalan Berjasa, Jalan Sultan Salahuddin, Jalan Tun Ismail, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Kinabalu and Jalan Raja before returning to Dataran Merdeka.

“As in previous years, we are truly grateful for the support from the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and DBKL who have worked closely with us to ensure smooth traffic movement and public safety on event day. This includes efficient planning to communicate road closures to the public. We look forward to another successful cycling event,” he said.

Speaking for the title sponsor, CEO of OCBC Al-Amin Bank Berhad Tuan Syed Abdull Aziz Syed Kechik said the thrust of KL OCBC Cycle 2019 remains the same as in previous years – to allow the masses a chance to challenge themselves by riding through a longer distance than that offered by the twice-monthly 7km OCBC KL Car Free Morning.

“This year we are even more conscious about inclusiveness and the environment. So we will see limited or no use at all of plastic packaging for the event packs. Instead, participant bibs, tags and apparel will be packaged in recyclable paper rolls or envelopes. There will be no paper flyers in the event packs as well. These will instead be replaced by large information boards at the event as well as information on the KL OCBC Cycle 2019 website. There will be no bubble wrap for medals. Instead, they will be handed to participants without any packaging. And there will also be recycling bins at strategic locations for collection of banana peels, which will then be sent off for composting,” he said.

The event will continue to feature prizes for four bicycle types – mountain, road, foldies and fat bikes – for both men and women.

TOP BERAKHIR DENGAN SEMPURNA, KINAN DOMINASI

SETIAWANGSA, 19 Oktober 2019 - Penganjuran edisi pertama Tour of Peninsular (ToP) berakhir dengan sempurna selepas mengharungi lima peringkat.

Pelumba skuad kebangsaan, Sofian Nabil Omar Mohd Bakri menduduki tempat ketiga.

Perlumbaan ToP anjuran Motoshoot Event Sdn Bhd berstatus 2.1 mempertandingkan lima peringkat bermula di Dungun pada Selasa lalu.

GARCIA SECURES OVERALL WIN
AT INAUGURAL TOUR OF PENINSULAR

SETIAWANGSA, 19 October 2019 - Kinan Cycling Team's Marcos Garcia Fernandez kept his calm to clinch a well deserved overall win in the yellow jersey competition after a thrilling final day of racing at the inaugural Tour of Peninsular (ToP) today.

The 151.4km fifth and final stage from Kuala Lipis to Wangsa Walk was won by Team Sapura Cycling's Christian Raileanu in 3:19:12s with Mohammadesmaeil Chaichiraghimi (Foolad Mobarakeh Sepahan) and Malaysia National Team's Sofian Nabil Omar coming in second and third.

There was a lot of movement in the peloton from the start but Garcia's 3:02s lead from yesterday remained unscathed as he finished 35th, 14 seconds behind Raileanu.

Garcia thus becomes the first ever winner of the Tour de Peninsular, an achievement he cherishes.

"The start of the stage today was a little bit crazy but when we settled down we managed to control the race," said Garcia.

"Of course I am very happy to win this tour, especially as this is the first year of the race (ToP). I love racing in Malaysia because the people are nice and they always support us.

"I don't make the decision but if the team comes back to race in ToP again next year I will definitely come because this place is special to me."

Sofian Nabil was equally delighted with his performance as he delivered Malaysia's second podium result of the tour after Danieal Haikkal Edy Suhaidee. Danieal placed third in the first stage.

"I attacked from about 60km from the finish and was with a group of three riders along with Raileanu three km from the end," said Sofian Nabil.

"I was not able to follow him (Raileanu) when he attacked but I am still happy because we (Malaysia) had only targeted one podium here.

"This is a good result for us especially with the Sea Games coming up next."

The teams and riders that won prize money were paid in cash at their team hotels today, a move which the organiser Motoshoot Event Sdn Bhd believes is important to build a positive reputation for the race.

ToP is Malaysia's first ever UCI 2.1 category race.
