Next New Wave is an initiative founded in 2015 to focus on nurturing young and emerging filmmakers in Malaysia. The name Next New Wave was a play on the previously groundbreaking but short-lived Malaysian New Wave which made its appearance in 2005, when Malaysian independent films were travelling to film festivals all over the world thus paving a new path for alternative cinema in Malaysia. A new

generation of filmmakers are beginning to find their own way with new technology and platforms, exploring new ways of filmmaking. Next New Wave is determined to help cultivate in these emerging storytellers the spirit for experimentation and perspective.

Sometimes AI gives us surprises! ✨

In our workshops, we usually emphasize preparing character sheets to ensure consistency and save credits. But sometimes, the AI surprises us by filling in the blanks perfectly.

Take a look at this AI video by our participant, Hanan. He started with a simple profile picture and a prompt:

"Use this image of me and make me run through a forest like in The Hunger Games, and make me wear Katniss' outfit too."

The result by KLING 3.0 is genius! 🏹🍃🤣

“If this day were to repeat for eternity, how would you live it?”

In the Intro to AI Filmmaking workshop, participant Ji Chenxi spent three days conceptualizing and creating a very intriguing short film in response to this question.

He shared his creative reflections:

“For this short film exercise, I used Nano Banana to generate characters and scene images. When I used the new Kling 3.0 model to generate the video, I was pleasantly surprised — it could generate up to five shots at once, and the visual consistency and editing logic between shots were handled really well.

Thinking back to when I first started using AI tools to make short films last year, it often felt like a process of constant compromise because the results couldn’t quite match my imagination. Now that the tools are getting more powerful, I’m able to focus more on my imagination itself. That feels really wonderful.

Thank you to mentor Jing Xuan for introducing and recommending these new AI tools.”

This past year, I’ve been learning to create with AI, and I’ve been deeply amazed by how quickly it has progressed.

My boss asked, “Why do you still enjoy being on set?”

I thought about it.

After half a day working with AI, I made this short film…

Yes, making films with AI is becoming easier and easier, and it will only keep getting better.

So why do I still like taking part in on-set filming?

What does “creation” really mean?

Is it a life experience that belongs only to me, unique and irreplaceable?

Sometimes, it simply means doing something that makes us happy. 😊

Last month, we completed the final AI Short Film Creation Workshop of 2025, including a 4-day “Yo Machine” Intro to AI Filmmaking, and a 6-day “Emotion Machine” Advanced AI Short Film Creation Workshop.

In 2025, we organised 7 editions of the AI Short Film Creation Workshop, working alongside 80 students to bring their works to life.

Throughout the year, as AI technologies rapidly evolved, we continuously refined and updated our workshop curriculum. We also hosted screenings and invited experts from different fields, creating spaces for discussion around creation and the future.

It has been a joy exploring new narrative possibilities shaped by emerging technologies together with all of you.

上个月，我们完成了 2025 年最后一期「AI 短片创作工作坊」，包括 4 天的「你好机器」AI 影像入门班，以及 6 天的「情感机器」AI 短片创作进阶班。

2025 年，我们共举办了 7 期AI短片创作工作坊，陪伴 80 位学员 一起完成创作。

这一年来，我们随着AI技术的快速发展，不断调整与更新工作坊课程；也举办放映会、邀请不同领域的专家，与同学们围绕创作与未来展开讨论。

很开心这一年可以和大家一起探索新科技下新的叙事可能。

In Kubrick's film, when the ape lifts the bone, a certain future was already written. Iron, bows and arrows, writing, gunpowder, the compass, navigation, the printing press, the internet. The ape with weapons defeats the ape without. The tribe that tells stories defeats the tribe that does not.

库布里克电影里，当猿人举起骨头，某种未来已被书写。铁器、弓箭、文字、火药、指南针、航海、印刷术、互联网。用武器的猿猴打败不用武器的猿猴。会说故事的部落打败不会说故事的部落。

Tan Chui Mui made this video with AI, she said "The arrival of AI reminds me of MiniDV twenty years ago. In Malaysia, where there was no film industry, it was that small machine that gave us the right to create. Today, AI brings the same possibility. It makes me feel that creation can be even freer."

陈翠梅用 AI 制作了这一部短片，也述说着新想法，“在没有电影工业的马来西亚，是那台小机器，给了我们创作的权利。今天，AI 带来了同样的可能。它让我觉得，创作可以更加自由”。
