Dreaming of Electric Sheep with AI 🐑
Last weekend, Next New Wave was invited to screen AI short films by our workshop participants at the "AI & Literature & Film Competition" event in Suzhou, China.
Since January 2025, NNW has been running a series of AI filmmaking workshops, inviting creators from different disciplines to make a short film in just 7–9 days. The 17 selected works include documentary, poetry film, animation, experimental, and essay film — each reflecting, in their own way, the creative possibilities sparked by this evolving technology.
NNW mentors Tan Chui Mui and Chua Jing Xuan joined the post-screening discussion, speaking about the intention behind these workshops: to build a bridge between filmmakers, artists and new technology. Instead of fear or anxiety, they invite curiosity — because a creator's intention, their perception of the world, and what they truly want to express are irreplaceable.
Tan Chui Mui was also invited to serve on the jury for the competition, themed "Rewriting the Future", jointly organised by Suwen Cultural Investment, Suzhou No. 1 Silk Factory, and OWSPACE.
At the award ceremony, she joined a panel discussion alongside Chen Qiufan (science fiction writer), Wang Hongwei (film producer), Xu Zhiyuan (writer and co-founder of OWSPACE), and Kuai Lehao (chief editor of Southern People Weekly) — exploring creativity and storytelling in the age of AI.
