His life story is the stuff made of in movies; and his life story has actually been depicted in the 2015 movie “Chowrasta”!

Tan Sri Ir Professor Emeritus Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar began life in poverty and gangsterism in Penang. His uncle, the local gang-leader known as the “Don” was his father figure who helped shape his early leadership and self-defence training in Thai Kick-Boxing. His mother showered love and guidance in her son whom she regarded as her “Khalid Al-Walid”.

It was only later, when tragic events forced him to leave Penang and enter the newly established ITM (now UiTM), that his life changed forever.

This institution presented him a lifeline from a life of poverty and gangsterism to later become a scholar, academician and professional engineer.

It is through a series of life-changing opportunities through ITM that Tan Sri would not only excel in his education but one day rise to serve as the university’s Vice-Chancellor.

In reflecting on his formative years and life in general, Tan Sri will always be indebted to UiTM and the people who cared for and helped shape him to be the leader he is today.
