Nagano’s most underrated onsen town - Karuizawa Hoshino Area

Home to the ultra-luxe Hoshinoya Resort

yet we stayed just down the road for over a thousand dollars LESS per night at 📍BEB5 Karuizawa

With access to:
- the same Tombo-no-yu onsen facilities
- a free loop shuttle of the area
- Haruinire Terrace riverside boardwalk village
- Karuizawa Bird Sanctuary and Picchio Nature Tours
- Active Volcano Hikes

and varied seasonal activities like (ours were end of winter into spring):
- ice skating
- DIY Mont Blanc
- a footsauna!!!!

comment ‘VOLCANO’ for the onsen hotel deets

controversial opinion: I would not go back to the Nara Deer Park at all (a story that should probably be its own post)

Yet I would book another ticket to Nara right now if I could just to eat at 📍 Okonomiyaki Parco

Where we were welcomed in by the sweetest husband and wife right as they opened for what became one of the best meals of our entire Japan trip.

What’s a meal from your travels you won’t stop thinking about?

FUN FACT: These ryokan baths were where the monkeys first learnt the habit a of hot spring bathing before they were later built their very own onsen in the now famous Snow Monkey Park.

The goal was to disperse them so guests could get their onsen back which I find hilarious now that we all come here to see the opposite haha

And sure enough, on a cold winters day the Japanese macaques still come by for a dip at
📍Jigokudani Onsen Korakukan

For us, as the sun set and the park closed, the entire troop made their way down the valley stopping in at the onsen to say hello to us. And again coming back up the mountain in the morning.

Terrifying, Exhilarating and Magical

Hey, I’m Dana and this is the best luxury glass igloo resort in Rovaniemi and how to stay here for a quarter of the price

comment ‘SANTA’ and my elves will deliver the hotel deets and my Lapland on a Budget guide

Just know i’m insanely jealous of your future stay at Apukka Resort (and the puppy cuddles you’ll get there)

comment ‘SAKE’ for the Kyoto footbath hotel deets

📍TOKYU STAY Kyoto Sanjo-Karasuma was full of surprises for its even more surprising price point.

Noting that low season was the reason we were able to find this freshly renovated hotel in the heart of Kyoto for only AUD75 a night compared to hundreds and thousands spent in peaks.

and how we were able to avoid the crowds at some of the most famous spots in Kyoto during our stay! but that’s a story for another day

expectation vs reality strikes again

Even as award winning travel photographers on a mission to capture this unique moment, when it finally came I froze…

To be fair, seeing 200 japanese macaque run down a mountain right at you while alone and exposed in an onsen is pretty terrifying.

After a while as more monkeys trickled through (even a wild bore in the distance) with many stopping by for a quick dip, drink and some other activities you can spot at the very end here hahah, I settled into the fairytale

that I can’t wait to finally dust off the footage to finally show you!

comment ‘SAKE’ for the Kyoto footbath hotel deets

our newly renovated room at 📍TOKYU STAY Kyoto Sanjo-Karasuma even had its own washing machine included (a sweaty Japan summer essential)

but the low season is the reason we were able to find this hotel in the heart of Kyoto for only AUD75 a night compared to what can get up to $500+ in peak

and how we were able to avoid the crowds at some of the most famous spots in Kyoto during our stay! but that’s a story for another day

controversial opinion: do not day trip here at all

Whether you drive or take the train/bus to Amagiso Odaru Onsen you’re looking at a 6hr+ travel day really not giving you much time to soak, let alone make the most of the entire Kawazu Seven Waterfall Trail.

I can not recommend enough spending at least one night in the Izu Peninsula (it’s full of surprises)

if one reel isn’t enough to convince you, comment GUIDE and i’ll send you everything you need to know about realistically visiting Japan’s unique waterfall onsen
