Terra Asia, a multi-year initiative that CFI Développement Médias CFImedias developed in partnership with Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) to improve the fieldwork capabilities and skillsets for newsrooms, is now in its final phase.

Participants for this programme shared their experiences and key takeaways from the time they have spent with Terra Asia. Beyond getting proper hands-on training that widens their understanding on news-reporting for environmental issues and conservation, they also learnt about next-gen technologies and how to best use them to be more effective and efficient.

The cohort for Terra Asia, a programme that CFI Développement Médias CFImedias developed with Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) had worked extensively on special news stories around Iloilo City, the Queen's City in the South, and some of the entries won well-deserved awards.

Here are the highlights from that special ceremony.

Terra Asia in-person gathering is now underway with participants presenting their learnings and findings this morning.

This initiative from CFI Développement Médias CFImedias and Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) provides the necessary training and fieldwork experience that newsrooms require to quickly adapt to the new demands and needs for a constantly evolving digital content ecosystem.

Broadcasters from NBC, Papua New Guinea, FBC Fiji, TVRI Indonesia, and PBS Philippines are some of the participants for Terra Asia. The year-long programme had participants gain new insights on what they can do when it comes to creating news coverage for environment issues and conservation. This includes producing a series of programmes that showcase climate issues, with the most recent being spending five days in Iloilo City, the Queen's City in the South and a green lung made of mangroves that is known as the sponge city for the Philippines.

Hands-on training and field experience are the best learning tools for any newsroom operations. For Terra Asia, one of the long-term programmes that CFI Développement Médias CFImedias CFI, agence française de développement médias worked closely with the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), focused on empowering newsroom operations that have a strong focus on environmental issues and challenges.

Beyond practical training, Terra Asia organised a contest for participants to conceptualise and produce a short film on that is relevant and relatable to the smaller island provinces of the Philippines. This also included establishing an esteemed panel of judges, a list of key objectives to follow, and a proper platform to engage in a fair and competitive manner.

Here are highlights from the ongoing contest that is set to conclude at the end of the Terra Asia programme.

Real world experiences usually have a more lasting impact – this is especially true when newsroom teams are put on the field and gain first-hand workplace engagement. During the Terra Asia on-site workshop – an initiative that CFI Développement Médias CFImedias worked closely with the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) – its participants have met with people of interest and locations with environmental issues.

In addition to capturing local insights and current sentiments from the ground, this direct interactions provided a better and more nuanced understanding of environmental issues that communities are now facing. This not only provides more details, but also ensure news coverage are able to capture the facts that resonate the most with audiences.

Newsrooms must quickly learn, understand, and adapt to these impact trends as they define how productions innovate to align with these changes and what steps to consider with the primary goal about capturing and reinforcing the attention and interests of youths.

This is even more critical for production teams that work on very fact-driven content, such as news coverage on environmental issues and conservation. The Terra Asia initiative, which CFImedias developed in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), wants to address this growing need among news production teams.

Among the various exercises are the online training that provide practical tasks for participants that ensure they get hands-on experience as part of the learning process. Here are some highlights from one of these virtual workshops.
