TCL NXTPAPER 14 TABLET — could've been great
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝:
+ Incredible display with useful eye comfort modes
+ Wireless display mode works great with Windows PCs
+ Long battery life in normal usage
𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭:
- Design doesn't include a kickstand
- Outdated chipset limits performance
- Overly ambitious pricing
Right off the bat, the TCL Mobile Malaysia NXTPAPER 14 is quite a mixed bag. It comes with an impressive matte 14.3-inch 2.4K screen. The screen is bright and vibrant, making it great for watching movies on, while the matte anti-glare coating ensures that you can comfortably see the display even in outdoor environments.
TCL included multiple "VersaView" display modes for your viewing comfort, and it makes for great ebook reading with its paper-like desaturated filter. But are you going to really hold a 14-inch tablet that tips the scales at 760g to read? Not to mention that the minimal bezels mean that there's not much to hold on to, making it quite an unergonomic experience.
But the TCL NXTPAPER 14 also has an ace up its sleeve in the form of its wireless display mode. It can seamlessly pair with any Windows PC wirelessly, and serve as an additional display without any additional software. Pretty neat way to take full advantage of the massive screen.
Now, comes the less exciting part. The overall experience is somewhat marred by the antiquated MTK Helio G99 chipset under the hood, which means you can forget about gaming or content creation on it. TCL also forgot to include a kickstand into the design of the included TPU soft case, which means that you have to source your own if you plan to watch movies on it.
𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐭?
For 𝗥𝗠𝟭,𝟳𝟰𝟴, I would say the TCL NXTPAPER 14 is a tad too steeply priced. The screen is truly an incredible sight to behold, but the overall experience just doesn't quite justify the price.
I think if TCL wants to take full advantage of their NXTPAPER technology, they should release an iPad mini-sized tablet to capture the ebook reader market. Or at least include a kickstand in the body/case of their next supersized tablet. A stylus would be nice too, since writing on a matte surface is going to be far more comfortable than on a glossy one.
