Arc’teryx just blew up its own brand image literally. On September 19, 2025, the company teamed up with explosion-obsessed artist Cai Guo-Qiang to fire off a fireworks project called Ascending Dragon at 5,500 meters in Tibet’s Himalayas.
-
When Cai closed the show by thanking the clever animals for helping him “raise havoc in the Heavenly Palace” - a Journey to the West nod, many felt it was tone-deaf, recasting a fragile Himalayan ridge as nothing more than a stage for mythic rebellion.
-
Arc’teryx defended the show, stressing the use of “harmless” biodegradable powders, certified under IOC and other international tests. They added that the fireworks were rated Level V, the lowest risk with noise and light pollution.
-
But critics weren’t convinced. Smoke, chemical byproducts, and even small shockwaves at 5,500m could unsettle wildlife, melt glaciers, or contaminate snow and consequences far less photogenic than glowing trails in the sky.
-
FYI: Arc’teryx is extremely popular in China. It’s often nicknamed “始祖鸟” (First Ancestor Bird), which sounds both reverent and a little cult-like. In big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, wearing an Arc’teryx shell has become shorthand for middle- and upper-class professionals, tech workers, and the whole exquisite camping crowd. So when the brand staged literal explosions in the Himalayas, many saw it as a betrayal of its “Leave No Trace” ethos.
