Indigenous communities in Malaysia developed different traps and snares for different animals and situations.

This traditional snare was set along tree branches to catch animals moving through the trees. Its design reflects an understanding of animal movement and the surrounding forest.

Art Deco shophouses are easy to recognise once you know what to look for.

Strong vertical lines, stepped parapets and clean geometric forms gave these buildings a bold, modern identity. They reflected a new design movement that spread across the world in the early 20th century.

Art Deco brought a new look to Kuala Lumpur’s old shophouses.

Instead of elaborate ornament, many buildings adopted cleaner lines, geometric decoration and stepped parapets inspired by the modern movement of the early 20th century.

Although their appearance changed, their purpose remained the same. These were still places where families lived, businesses operated and communities grew.

By documenting each architectural era, we’re documenting how living culture continues to evolve through the spaces people use every day.

Late FMS shophouses can be recognised by their cleaner lines and more ordered façades, often combined with large pediments and rows of dentils.

These details are part of the changing architectural language of Kuala Lumpur’s old shophouses — buildings shaped by different periods in the city’s history.

Look closely at the old streets and these layers are still visible today.

By the 1920s and 1930s, a different style was appearing along the streets of Kuala Lumpur.

Late FMS Eclectic shophouses were generally less heavily ornamented than their Early FMS predecessors. Large pediments, dentils and more restrained façades helped define the period.

These buildings are part of the story of how Kuala Lumpur grew and changed — places built for generations of people to work, trade and live.
