Strike moment! Finally cracked the code and landed this target species after scouting a few different spots.
Known locally as Ikan Raja, the Peacock Bass (genus Cichla) is a legendary Amazonian predator. In Malaysia, we primarily encounter the Butterfly Peacock Bass (Cichla ocellaris) and the Speckled/Giant Peacock Bass (Cichla temensis).
These "Amazonian Aliens" have thrived in our tropical climate, especially in former tin mining pools and lakes. They are highly opportunistic hunters, often seen with a distinctive "eye-spot" (ocellus) on their tail to confuse other predators. Whether it's the 40cm fighters or the 80cm trophy monsters, their explosive aggression against artificial lures is unmatched.
I’m coming back soon with a more suitable setup to hunt some giants. Stay tuned.
