Jeantet pipes are a brand of traditional French briar smoking pipes, known for their classic shapes and good value. The brand, which originated in the pipe-making capital of Saint-Claude in 1816, is now part of the Chapuis-Comoy & Cie group (makers of Chacom pipes).
BRAND HISTORY
The Jeantet family firm's history in Saint-Claude dates back to at least 1775, initially producing wooden items like shanks for porcelain and cherrywood pipes.
1816: The enterprise was formally named Jeantet-David.
1858: The company began the manufacture of its own briar pipes.
Peak Production: Around the late 1960s, the company was a major French pipe factory, producing tens of thousands of pipes annually.
Acquisition: In 1988, Jeantet merged into the Cuty Fort Group (now Chapuis-Comoy & Cie), and production was consolidated, with Jeantet pipes becoming a sub-brand.
KEY CHARACTERISTIC
Jeantet pipes are recognized for specific features:
Material: The bowls are made from briar that has undergone a long drying process, which contributes to a pleasant smoking experience.
Stem: They often feature ebonite (vulcanite) stems, with some vintage models using Bakelite.
Filter System: Many models incorporate an aluminum filter system.
Design: They generally have traditional, classic shapes, such as the Billiard, Bent Billiard, and Rhodesian. Some vintage or specific lines included unique finishes like leather wrapping or meerschaum lining.
AVAILABILITY
New Jeantet pipes are still produced as a sub-brand of Chacom and are available from online pipe retailers. A wide variety of estate (pre-owned) and new old stock (unsmoked) Jeantet pipes can also be found for sale on auction sites and specialized vintage pipe retailers.
