Reports have emerged detailing the systematic confiscation of Rohingya-owned land and properties in Arakan (Rakhine State) by the Arakan Army (AA), continuing a troubling pattern of dispossession that dates back to pre-2017. According to sources, these actions mirror policies previously employed by the Myanmar military junta, which resulted in the seizure of nearly 70% of Rohingya land and redistribution to local Buddhist communities.
The AA, a Buddhist militant group, has reportedly intensified its campaign of land appropriation between 2017 and 2024, employing tactics ranging from coercion to outright violence. Numerous Rohingya families have been displaced, their properties seized and redistributed to Buddhist Mogs, the majority ethnic group in the region. Eyewitness accounts corroborate that AA operatives have forcibly relocated Rohingya communities under the guise of offering them "better opportunities," only for them to lose their rights to both their original and new settlements.

The AA is allegedly exploiting internal divisions within Rohingya communities to further its objectives. Reports suggest that the group has recruited local Rohingya collaborators in villages, enticing them with promises of prosperity and influence to manipulate their own people. These "community leaders" are used to persuade others to comply with AA demands, including relinquishing land rights.
In some instances, individuals are coerced into signing over their property rights through threats or under duress. Witnesses claim that AA forces have compelled villagers to provide fingerprints on pre-written agreements, effectively stripping them of their ownership. Subsequently, displaced families are placed on boats under false assurances of being transported to safety in countries like Malaysia, leaving them in an even more precarious situation.

The current actions of the AA draw striking parallels to the policies enforced by the Myanmar military junta, which systematically dispossessed Rohingya of their ancestral lands over decades. By redistributing these lands to Buddhist communities, the junta created an environment of ethnic exclusion and economic marginalization. Human rights advocates fear that the AAโs adoption of similar tactics could exacerbate tensions and further entrench the oppression of Rohingya in the region.

This ongoing crisis highlights the urgent need for intervention from international organizations and human rights bodies. Experts warn that unless the AAโs activities are curbed, the Rohingya community risks losing what little remains of their ancestral land and cultural heritage in Arakan. Advocacy groups are calling for increased monitoring and pressure on all actors in the region to halt the systematic erasure of Rohingya presence in their homeland.
Further investigations and evidence collection are underway to substantiate the claims, with calls for accountability growing louder in the face of these deeply concerning developments.
