Jane Jacobs changed the way we think about cities. She challenged the traditional approach to urban planning that focused on efficiency, uniformity, and massive developments. Instead, she showed us that cities aren’t just machines to be fixed, they’re living, breathing places shaped by the people who live in them.

At Space + Culture, we share this belief. Great cities are built on connection, diversity, and the everyday moments that make a community come alive. When people are at the center of our planning, we create cities that feel alive, full of culture and possibility. Let’s design with people, not just for them.

As we embrace the spirit of Raya, we are reminded of the beauty of balik kampung.

From the wooden verandas where stories are shared to the bustling kitchens filled with the aroma of tradition, our kampung homes are more than just places; they are living reflections of our space and culture.

Wishing you safe travels and a Raya filled with joy, togetherness, peace and harmony.

As we approach the Raya season, we reflect on the objects and spaces that hold deeper cultural significance, symbols that transcend time and geography, evoking a collective sense of belonging.

Debi Tirar Mas Fotos has captured this sentiment masterfully with its now-iconic image of two white chairs, a visual metaphor that resonates universally, regardless of background.

In many homes, these chairs are more than just functional objects; they are silent witnesses to moments of reunion, conversations that bridge generations, and the quiet presence of those who came before us. They represent the architecture of togetherness, the spatial embodiment of balik kampung where families return not just to a physical place, but to a shared history and identity.

As we celebrate Raya, let us honour these everyday spaces that shape our collective memory. From all of us at Space + Culture, Selamat Hari Raya. May this season bring meaningful connections, reflection, and a renewed appreciation for the spaces we call home.
