Christmas Is Under Attack in India
What should be a season of peace and celebration has instead become a disturbing pattern of intimidation, vandalism, and violence across multiple states.
ASSAM
In Nalbari, members of VHP and Bajrang Dal entered St Mary’s School in Panigaon village, vandalised and burned Christmas banners and decorations, and targeted nearby shops. The protest was against celebrations they claimed were of “non-Indian origin.” A complaint has been received, but no case was initially registered.
CHHATTISGARH
In Raipur, a mob armed with sticks stormed Magneto Mall and destroyed Christmas installations during a statewide bandh called by Hindu groups. Videos show chaos and slogan-raising. An FIR has been filed against unidentified individuals.
DELHI
In Lajpat Nagar, women wearing Santa caps were allegedly harassed by men linked to a Hindu vigilante group, accused of attempting religious conversion.
KERALA
In Charummoodu, Karimulakkal, a Christmas carol group—including women and children—was reportedly attacked by Hindutva extremists wielding weapons, turning a peaceful celebration into fear and violence.
MADHYA PRADESH
In Jabalpur, a visually impaired woman attending a Christmas programme was publicly abused and physically harassed, allegedly by a BJP city vice president—an incident that has shocked many.
ODISHA
Roadside vendors selling Santa caps were reportedly harassed for selling what were termed “Christian items” in a “Hindu” country.
This is not about law and order or public safety. It is about shrinking space for religious freedom and normalising hate. Silence and inaction only embolden extremism. India’s strength lies in its pluralism—and that is what is under attack.
