THIS WEEKEND ONLY - While displayed in the reading room for the whole provided period, these special books are rarely seen and hard to come across as they are all a part of private collections scattered throughout the city. These volumes have witnessed and documented key moments in Malaysian architecture — a true testament to the research and dedication of their writers.

Join us for a guided viewing of the reading room’s “do-not-touch” treasures. Limited slots available, register via link in our bio.

Suburbia Projects invites you to the launch of our latest book: Between Rail and River: Notes in Time on Kluang by E9A Architecture, a quiet yet powerful reflection on place, memory, and the architecture of in-betweenness.

Through interviews, archival clippings, photography, and illustrations, E9A Architecture has gently traced Kluang’s modernist past and uncertain future—asking us to rethink narratives of progress beyond the city center.

Thank you .boyd.foundation for having us, .projects / at the Walsh St house today. We have not seen a brilliant house like this in a while - great experiment on structure and spatial function, beautiful materiality without missing homey, cosy spaces for the family. Thanks Josephine!

Architecture is more than just style — it is a reflection of culture, history, and how we live. In his latest book after the success of Automatism and Ethos, Huat Lim explores building typologies as a way to understand our shared evolution through design. From ancient to modern drawing examples, built and unbuilt as well as written texts on architecture, Huat Lim argues how form, function, and culture come together to shape our world. The essays featured challenge us to see buildings not just as structures, but as living systems tied to who we are. This is a fresh lens on how we create spaces — and how they, in turn, shape us.

*BOOK DISCUSSION*
Sharing by Calvin Chua (Spatial Anatomy) hosted by Suburbia Projects & Tintabudi

“Singapore Strata Malls: A Retrospective for the Future” examines the rising interest in strata malls, particularly after events like the preservation of Golden Mile Complex in 2021 and the redevelopment of Peace Centre in 2023. These events highlight the increasing recognition of the social, heritage, and architectural value of these buildings. Based on five years of research and discussions, the book provides an overview of strata malls, focusing on their urban and architectural features, potential for creative changes, and how they foster certain types of shops and activities.

Date: SATURDAY, 25 January 2025
Time: 4pm-6pm
Venue: Tintabudi Bookstore, TTDI Plaza, K.Lumpur
Free entry, refreshments provided.

We’re two sleeps away from debuting *TWO* new titles this weekend,

1 - *Singapore Strata Malls: A Retrospective for the Future* by .chua and Aurelia Chan from .sg , designed by .theory . The book provides a comprehensive overview of strata malls, informed by five years of research and dialogue on their urban and architectural characteristics and their unique ability to foster specific interests, shops and activities. Divided into two sections—“Structure” and “Spirit”—the book analyses the physical traits of these malls alongside thought-provoking essays that explore various creative interventions within them.

2 - *A Hundred Ways to Erect A Hoarding* . Authored primarily by , with contributions from , , and , the book utilise a blend of evocative imagery—some photographed and some AI-generated—to accompany reflections of the authors. As Shamin and Clara utilises generated images to reassess his temporal home in ever-changing Dubai and the urge to look for the ‘everyday sublime’, Danishwara and Amanda look at how the images reinforces biases in separate fields - art and history.

Both books are available for preorder at a promo price via link in Bio and will be available this weekend, at Singapore Art Book Fair

EARLY BIRD PRICE FROM 21/10/2024 - 03/11/2024 ; RM99.00 (RRP : RM120)

From the ever-changing urban landscape of Dubai, where construction sites continually reshape the cityscape, “A Hundred Ways to Erect a Hoarding” emerges as an exploration of boundaries, both physical and psychological. This book blends documentation and visual experimentation of the author’s daily observations of construction sites and their hoardings, all through the lens of an outsider.
The book, primarily authored by Shamin Sharum with contributing writers, and edited by Amanda Ariawan, is a reflection on the site hoardings — temporary barriers that delineate construction zones. These hoardings are not just physical structures but symbols that evoke a range of emotions and meanings. Through a combination of written essays and evocative imagery, partly photographed and partly AI-generated, it assembles and reassembles the concept of the hoarding, exploring how it frames our perceptions of hope, progress, and fear.

Featuring foreword by Huat Lim, writings by Clara Peh and Danishwara Nathaniel and an interview with Jowin Foo.

[PRE ORDER VIA LINK IN BIO] SINGAPORE STRATA MALLS: A Retrospective for the Future (EXPECTED 25/10/2024)

SINGAPORE STRATA MALLS: A Retrospective for the Future - Strata malls are valuable cultural markers of national identity with archives of intergenerational Singapore stories, contributing to the quintessential flavour of Singapore neighbourhoods.

If newer developer-managed malls represent spaces of consumption, strata malls represent spaces of community and neighbourhood participation.

Authored by Calvin Chua and Aurelia Chan from Spatial Anatomy, with contributed pieces by Karen Tan from The Projector, Kar-Men Cheng, Ethel Pang and Akai Chew.
