Last weekend, Empower held our latest Enhancing Women’s Political Participation Workshop , this time around focusing exclusively on university students from various institutions in Malaysia. A big thank you to all those who attended! Your enthusiasm throughout the three days were truly encouraging for us as organisers.
Day 1 opened with an empowering session on Human Rights and Gender Equality by Azura Nasron (Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM)). Participants explored core principles including equality, human rights, feminism, intersectionality and justice, and discussed how these connect to political participation and inclusive governance.
Day 2 covered Parliamentary Processes, facilitated by Idzuafi Hadi Participants learned how Parliament functions, from drafting bills to debating policies, and how these systems can be navigated to amplify their voices.
Lastly, Day 3 focused on the Malaysian Electoral System. The session was facilitated by Asraf Sharafi Mohammad Azhar (Bersih). Simulations and role-playing deepened participants' understanding of the voting process and gave insight into campaigning, voter engagement and policy considerations.
A special shout-out to for the support that made this workshop possible, and to our partners Mandiri - Pusat Pembangunan Rakyat and Gerakan Perempuan Melawan for collaborating with us in strengthening women’s political empowerment. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to YB Amira Aisya Abd Aziz for joining our special panel discussion and taking the time to answer all our questions.
