A Tribute to Phillip Pong Chang Khim (1966 - 2025)

Phillip Pong passed away very shortly after this video was shot on 22 June 2025. We got to know him during the Enhancing Political Participation Among the Deaf Community (EPPD) Workshop organised jointly by Empower, DAWN and JUPEBIM.

He participated fully, frequently popping questions, making his views known and working the simulations and table exercises as if he was a life long student of politics. His energy and enthusiasm was contagious.

After he passed away we found out what an outstanding person he was in the many contributions he made to the deaf community especially in the arena of sports. Tributes poured in from far and wide.

Empower is honoured to have got to know him albeit for only the shortest of time. His passing was deeply mourned by his family and the deaf community, in particular. We pay tribute to him. We will miss him and our thoughts remain with the family.

We recently had a meeting with members of the MCA leadership, including Secretary-General Datuk Chong Sin Woon - 张盛闻, to discuss the need for greater opportunities for women within party structures and the importance of increasing women's political representation. We truly appreciate their time, the opportunity to engage, and their willingness to share openly during the discussion with the Projek30% team.

Earlier this week, we had a visit from interns under the Global Service Internship Program (GSiP), currently based in Malaysia.

The students, who are majoring in Global Politics and Economics at Tamkang University, Taiwan, were introduced to EMPOWER’s work, including our advocacy on women’s political participation through Projek30%, and our community-based workshops.

We hope the visit gave them a glimpse into the realities and grassroots work of civil society in Malaysia.

Gambar -gambar dari pertemuan kedua kami bersama Wanita PKR sebagai sebahagian daripada usaha berterusan di bawah Projek 30%. Kali ini, kami turut disertai rakan-rakan CSO dari Bersih, CSO Platform for Reform, dan Martabat PJ.

Kami telah berbincang bersama YB Fadhlina Sidek, Ketua Wanita Parti Keadilan Rakyat, serta pimpinan wanita PKR yang lain tentang strategi dan ruang yang boleh diteroka untuk meningkatkan penyertaan wanita dalam politik.

Perjalanannya masih panjang, tetapi kami teruja dengan keterbukaan dan kemungkinan yang ada di hadapan. Projek 30% semakin kukuh dengan setiap pertemuan 💪.

Election Simulation with the Deaf Community.

One of the more exciting sessions at our Enhancing Political Participation Among the Deaf Community (EPPD) workshop was the election simulation exercise led by our facilitator, Asraf Sharafi!

Many participants had never experienced voting at a polling station before, and this hands-on activity gave them a chance to understand how the process works.

Participants were divided into groups, and each group was tasked with developing their own manifesto. Once each group had a chance to present their manifestos, we simulated a real election complete with voting booths, ballot papers, and a vote-counting process.

The experience helped to break down barriers to participation by building familiarity and confidence in the democratic process.

During our recent Enhancing Political Participation Among the Deaf Community (EPPD) workshop, participants took part in an intersectionality exercise led by our facilitator Azura Nasron. Each person took on a character with different identities and characteristics, and were asked to line up from most to least privilegedbased on what they felt.

What stood out to us as organisers was how rich and reflective the discussion was. Unlike other communities we've worked with, the Deaf participants engaged in deep debate over which characteristics held more privilege and why. Their lived experience as a marginalised and often sidelined community gave us a powerful and unique lens into how they perceive social hierarchies and was a reminder of how easy it is to take certain forms of privilege for granted.

Empower recently held the Enhancing Political Participation Among the Deaf Community (EPPD) Workshop on 21–22 June at Menara PKNS, Petaling Jaya!

A heartfelt thank you to our facilitators, participants, interpreters and our special guests for making this event a meaningful and engaging one.

The Deaf community, like many others with disabilities, remains one of the most marginalised groups in Malaysia when it comes to access to political spaces and decision-making processes. Barriers in communication, lack of accessible information, and systemic exclusion have long limited their ability to be represented. This workshop was a step towards addressing that gap by creating a space where knowledge, confidence, and political awareness can grow.

We had the opportunity to meet with Parti MUDA Malaysia president YB Amira Aisya Abd Aziz and special officer Adam Azrai as part of our Projek30% campaign to push for greater women’s political participation in Malaysia.
