It was a historic day at Parliament!

Participants from our previous Enhancing Political Participation for the Deaf (EPPD) workshop joined a special field trip the Parliament at the invitation of Dewan Rakyat Speaker YB Tan Sri Dato' Johari Abdul, who also graciously hosted us for lunch.

Organised by EMPOWER, together with Persatuan Jurubahasa dan Penterjemah Komuniti Pekak Selangor dan Kuala Lumpur (JUPEBIM) and Advokasi Pekak Malaysia - Malaysian Deaf Advocacy (DAWN), this marks what is believed to be the first-ever delegation of all-deaf participants to visit Parliament.

For many who made the trip, it was their very first experience seeing the heart of our democracy in action. Yet, this milestone also reminds us that the deaf community remains largely marginalised from political participation.

A heartfelt thank you to Speaker Tan Sri Dato’ Johari for the warm welcome and for opening Parliament’s doors to make this experience possible.

We hope that DAWN will continue to lead the way in pushing for greater representation and inclusion of the deaf community in Malaysian politics.

Yesterday, Empower alongside representatives from Association of Women Lawyers, Bersih and CSO Platform for Reform met with the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) on Women, Children, and Community Development for the second time to discuss Project 30% and the way forward. We thank the committee members for their valuable feedback and suggestions, and we look forward to a collaborative future in advancing women’s political participation.

Gendered disinformation is an often overlooked issue that continues to silence and discredit women in politics, creating barriers to fair representation.

KRYSS is currently running a campaign to tackle gendered disinformation and its harmful impact on women in politics, and we were recently invited to share our perspectives on this important topic on BFM.

A big thank you to Kryss Network for including Projek 30% in this critical conversation. Hopefully together we can push back against harmful narratives and strengthen women’s voices in politics.

Malaysia is one of the few countries in the world that has attained parity across genders at the tertiary education level.
