Re: Frame is facing an identity crisis.

Just kidding, it’s not really like that. What we do have are new plans that include a new identity.

Not long ago, we began casting for our third short film. While we still plan to produce the film, circumstances have led us to postpone it and focus our current efforts on the “secret project” we had previously mentioned.

At the same time, we’ve also been mulling over our identity. An identity is important - it defines what we are and what we represent. Hence, it is not at a whim that we have considered changing ours, and when we announce our new one it will be after a period of serious consideration.

As you may have noticed, we’ve also stopped putting out our recent social media content after the initial week or two. We are not sure when we will resume posting, but we have plans for this in the making.

While we wish that we can churn out quality content at a steady pace, reality doesn’t always agree with our plans. However, we remain determined first and foremost to produce and release content that reflect our goals and can be proud of. Lengthy delays aren’t good, but if a degree of patience and meticulous care can help us produce the films we want to produce, then we will adhere to that over the temptation of simply pumping out content. So, please look forward to the next time you hear from us again!

Every year around this time, there is a golden statue that represents the biggest moment for the silver screen of the yesteryear. This is the moment when artists are being honored for their recent years of effort in film productions.

The Oscars ceremony might simply look like an award show but in fact, it is more of a celebration, an event where films are being appreciated and celebrated worldwide at the same time. A film shall not be defined by ratings, but rather each film is, at this time, being treated for how much they have inspired the world and how strong it has been connected with the audience.

This is my first time watching The Oscars live. It's obviously different from reading about it from the news for which I have been doing in the past. It definitely was less impactful than actually seeing the winners going up the stage and delivering acceptance speech in real time.

What I find most engaging while watching the Oscars is how the artists' passion, excitement, dreams and hope have transcended out from the TV screen. And the immediate reaction when the winners' name are called. Not to mention the first time tribute videos and song performances were played in front of us before it became a topic. It was an extraordinary experience. It is similar to watching a great movie for the first time before it became a household name every one is discussing about.

The Academy Award is a reminder for all of us why we love movies, and a motivation for filmmakers on why we pursuit filmmaking. Let’s be naive for a second and forget about what politics are happening behind The Academy, and how many films are being snubbed off the opportunity to earn an Oscar. This celebration of cinema still highlights some of the best works and it is an acknowledgement of the importance of films in general, that this medium has constantly changed how the society works and how individual behaves.

Good films can be passed down from generation to generation and live forever to inspire people. Hence why this annual event must go on for all moviegoers and filmmakers around the globe. As Viola Davis puts it during her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress in Oscars 2017, artists are "the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life.".

I'm not a train expert or enthusiast, but I do sort of like riding trains (except for the KTM). That's (partly) the reason why our debut short film, Link, has main character Theresa riding the MRT to and from work instead of driving or taking a cab.

My liking for trains is owed entirely to Makoto Shinkai's (of Your Name fame) 2007 film, 5 Centimetres per Second. The first segment features protagonist Takaki Tōno making a long journey by train to meet his friend, Akari Shinohara, before she moves to an even further place. I guess I was touched by that, especially when, despite the delays from the snow, Takaki still found Akari waiting for him at his destination. Unlike Takaki, Theresa's train journeys lack such a sense of purpose or firm direction.

Filming Link's MRT scenes made the Re; Frame team sick of trains for a while, but the public transport will eventually be featured again in one of our projects... probably.

"... but doth not the appetite alter? A man loves the
meat in his youth that he cannot endure in his age." - Benedick during his soliloquy in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing.

These very words, as delivered by Kenneth Branagh in his 1993 film adaptation of the play, simply blew my mind away. Granted, the words were taken from the play itself, but it was probably the first time that I had become so impressed by lines uttered in a film. (I think I watched this prior to Before Sunrise). Never had I expected to be so transfixed by a guy talking to himself, and I pretty much just stood in front of my television screen until the soliloquy ended. The words aside, it was also Branagh's animated and passionate delivery (and his accent!) which contributed to my enjoyment too.

You can watch Branagh's rendition of the soliloquy here, starting from 4:03: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbF7LVDKEqk

While I pick which anime drama to watch based on the synopsis, I sometimes become engrossed more by the character interactions rather than the overall story. This scene from 2016's A Silent Voice is an example of one of those character interactions.

This particular conversation takes place between main character Shouya Ishida and Yuzuru, the younger sister of the girl he had bullied in elementary school. At one point, Yuzuru questions how genuine Ishida's attempts to make up for his past bullying actually are, and the discomfort and sense of distance that topic creates are masterfully conveyed with clever framing and by showing things from his point-of-view. Thanks to both his lowered umbrella and gaze, we end up looking mainly at the ground and Yuzuru's feet while the umbrella provides a barrier between them. When Yuzuru lifts the umbrella and reestablishes eye contact, the sense that their broken connection had been restored is palpable and feels a bit intimate as we are still seeing things in first-person.

The script for our next short film wasn't inspired by this movie, but I'm sure that YK Chew would want to provide scenes as interestingly framed as some of those in A Silent Voice.

Re: “Re: Frame”

Re: Frame is an idea born from a love of film, TV and the desire to rebel against the norm.

At this stage, we are a non-profit film studio seeking to test our limits - we have only 3 main crew members, barely any budget (first short film was produced under RM100) and limited equipment (mostly DIY stuff). Even then, our desire to tell stories through film remains unstifled.
