Released in 2015 through Season of Mist/Underground Activists, A Furrow Cut Short is Drudkh's tenth full-length album and a particularly strong entry point into the Ukrainian band's world: long-form compositions, repetitive hypnotic riffs, harsh vocals and melodies that carry an unmistakable sense of melancholy.

This is atmospheric black metal where repetition is part of the architecture.

The seven tracks are substantial pieces. “Cursed Sons I” runs over nine minutes, “To the Epoch of Unbowed Poets” another nine, while “Dishonour I” and “Dishonour II” together stretch beyond eighteen minutes. The complete album runs close to an hour.

But the length has a purpose.

Drudkh build atmosphere gradually. Riffs repeat until they stop feeling merely like riffs and begin functioning almost like landscapes. Melodies emerge from the distortion, disappear, then return. There is aggression here, certainly, but also sorrow, contemplation and a distinctly autumnal feeling — something already communicated beautifully by the cover.

MORE THAN JUST BLACK METAL

One of the important things about Drudkh is the band's relationship with Ukrainian culture and literature.

For A Furrow Cut Short, mastermind Roman Sayenko drew heavily from 20th-century Ukrainian poetry, particularly writing connected with Ukraine's historical struggles, oppression, cultural identity and resistance. Season of Mist itself describes the album as balancing black despair and resistance with the beauty of Ukrainian landscapes and culture.

That context matters.

It means the atmosphere isn't simply there because “black metal should sound dark.” There is a cultural and literary foundation underneath it.

And Drudkh have traditionally taken an unusual approach to promotion. Around this album, the label noted their policy of no interviews, no photographs, no live performances and no statements. The idea was essentially that the music should speak for itself.

WHY SHOULD YOU OWN IT?

Because Drudkh are one of those bands that make considerably more sense when you approach their music as albums rather than individual tracks.

You don't really need an algorithm jumping from “Cursed Sons I” into some unrelated recommended black metal song.

Put the CD in.

Start at Track 1.

Leave it alone for an hour.

Let the record build its own environment.

And physically, this limited-edition digipak suits an album like A Furrow Cut Short. The autumn forest artwork isn't merely decoration; it visually complements the melancholic, nature-soaked atmosphere contained inside.

🇫🇮 Finnish Metalcore / Melodic Death Metal

If your metal collection has a weakness for that distinctly Finnish combination of melody and heaviness, here's a lesser-known title worth investigating.

As I May come from Mikkeli, Finland, and My Own Creations is their debut full-length album, released in 2019. The band works in the territory where modern metalcore meets melodic death metal: heavy riffing, aggressive vocals, clean melodic passages and the melancholy that frequently surfaces in Finnish metal.

What makes My Own Creations interesting is that it doesn't simply chase brutality.

Songs such as “Pride Goes Before a Fall,” “What a Waste,” “Silent” and “End of the Falls” show a band balancing heaviness with accessibility. There are breakdowns and harsh vocals, but also large choruses and melodic guitar work. If you enjoy the point where melodic death metal crosses into modern metalcore, this is where the album makes sense.

There is also something attractive about owning the first album of a band.

A debut captures the point before a band's identity becomes completely settled. You hear the influences, the ambition and the attempt to establish a sound. My Own Creations documents As I May at exactly that stage.

WHY OWN THIS CD?

Because collecting metal becomes much more interesting once you move beyond buying only the universally recognised albums.

Everybody knows the major names.

The fun begins when your shelves contain records that make another metalhead stop and ask:

“What's this?”

Here's one for people who dig deeper than the obvious punk names.

First, don't confuse The Bristles on this album with the Swedish punk band of the same name. These Bristles came from New Jersey, USA, and Last Years Youth was released in 1995 by Beer City Records, the American hardcore/punk label whose catalogue also includes bands such as D.R.I. and M.D.C. Beer City still lists the record in its official discography as BCR020.

And the cover tells you almost everything you need to know.

No polished artwork. No carefully manufactured punk aesthetic. Just that crude red sleeve, black-and-white photograph and a record that looks like it came directly out of the American DIY punk underground.

Musically, Last Years Youth is raw, fast, confrontational street-level punk rock. It doesn't try to sound sophisticated. The attraction is precisely the opposite: short songs, abrasive guitars, shouted vocals and the sort of reckless energy that makes punk work when it feels like a bunch of people actually mean what they're playing.

The track list makes the attitude pretty clear:

“I’m a Loser” is particularly representative. A retrospective punk review described it as almost punk reduced to its basic ingredients—the loser/outsider sentiment, snarled delivery and sheer conviction carrying the song.

WHY SHOULD YOU OWN IT?

Because collecting punk shouldn't stop at S*x Pistols, Ramones, The Clash, Dead Kennedys or Black Flag.

Once you go further underground, you discover thousands of bands that never became household names but were the actual connective tissue of punk culture: tiny labels, small venues, photocopied flyers, DIY records and scenes that existed because somebody cared enough to keep them alive.

The Bristles belong to that world.

And that's exactly why finding something like Last Years Youth on CD is fun. You're not buying it because Rolling Stone told you it's one of the 500 greatest albums ever made.

You're buying it because you found something.

A relatively obscure American punk record from 1995, released through a genuine underground label, sitting here almost three decades later for:

If you want to own just one Def Leppard album on CD, Hysteria is the obvious candidate.

Released in 1987, this was the album where Def Leppard and producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange pushed hard rock into something extraordinarily polished without completely removing the guitars. Huge layered vocals, meticulously constructed guitar parts, massive drums and hooks engineered to stay in your head — Hysteria became one of the defining rock records of the late 1980s.

And look at the songs:

Hysteria

That is an absurd concentration of recognizable Def Leppard material on a single album.

But Hysteria is also important because of how it was made. Drummer Rick Allen had lost his left arm in a car accident in 1984, yet returned with a specially developed electronic/acoustic drum setup. Instead of hiding the resulting sound, the production incorporated it into the identity of the record. Those enormous, highly processed drums became part of what makes Hysteria instantly recognizable.

The album itself was an enormous commercial success, reaching No. 1 in both the UK and US and turning Def Leppard into one of the biggest rock bands in the world. More importantly, it demonstrated how far a hard-rock record could be taken through studio production without simply becoming pop music.

EXIT-13 — GREEN IS GOOD! (1990)

This is the kind of CD that reminds you how strange and adventurous early grindcore could be before the genre became increasingly codified.

Pennsylvania's Exit-13 formed in 1989 around vocalist Bill Yurkiewicz — the co-founder of Relapse Records — alongside guitarist Steve O'Donnell and bassist Joel DiPietro. Green Is Good! was their first full-length, recorded in June/July 1990 and originally released through Germany's Ecocentric Records.

And this particular CD is interesting.

The original Ecocentric CD edition (E.R.101-CD) was limited to only 1,000 copies. It contains 14 tracks in just under 34 minutes, including “Anthropocentric-Ecocidal Conundrum,” “Gaia,” “Ecotopian Visions,” “Get High on Life” and “Disemboweling Party.”

Musically, don't expect straightforward blast-beat grind from beginning to end. Exit-13 were already messing with the formula. One retrospective description notes the album's incorporation of doom, jazz and acid-rock elements into grindcore, while contemporary underground commentary highlighted the band's environmental and self-reflective lyrical concerns.

That's what makes Green Is Good! worth owning.

It captures grindcore at a point when musicians were still discovering just how far they could stretch it. It's abrasive and primitive, but also eccentric, humorous, political and environmentally conscious. Even a track simply called “The Funk Song” sits among all the grinding chaos.

The album later resurfaced as part of the 1993 Don't Spare the Green Love compilation and again on Relapse's 2007 High Life! retrospective.

But having the actual Green Is Good! CD is another matter entirely—especially if this is indeed the original Ecocentric pressing shown here.

For the grindcore collector who already owns Na**lm Death, Carcass, Terrorizer, Brutal Truth and the usual essentials, this goes deeper into the history.
