Hampir tiga dekad berniaga ayam di pasar tani, Zulkifli Abdan bergantung kepada sebuah lori satu tan untuk menguruskan perniagaannya setiap hari.

With every heartbeat, the heart’s valves open and close to keep blood flowing in the right direction. When they stop functioning properly, however, the consequences can be serious.

FMT Lifestyle spoke with Dr Mohd Azhari Yakub, senior consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Institut Jantung Negara (IJN), to learn more about the symptoms, risks and screening options for heart-valve disease.

“The function of the valves is basically like any valve in an engine – to make sure blood flows in one direction and doesn’t flow backwards. They also play an important role in the heart’s ability to pump effectively,” said Azhari.

It comes as little surprise that Daniel Woodroof’s favourite word is “pivot”. After all, few people can say they have gone from aspiring Formula 1 driver to television presenter, consultant and, ultimately, entrepreneur.

The co-founder of KL-based boutique digital marketing and creative agency Pandan Social was recently named one of six Malaysians on the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2026 list.

“This was such an unexpected award. It’s been a dream of mine for such a long time, to be on a list like this,” Woodroof told FMT Lifestyle.

“I got an email saying I was shortlisted a few weeks ago – it was completely surreal. And to see this now, I’m just gobsmacked.”

The Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF) is stepping up efforts to integrate biodiversity conservation into oil palm plantation management, with the aim of strengthening wildlife coexistence within production landscapes.

Conservation and sustainability department manager Ahmad Shahdan Kasim said plantations, forests and wildlife should be managed as part of a connected landscape rather than as separate systems.

Such an approach, he explained, would allow plantations to remain productive while improving ecological connectivity and reducing human-wildlife conflict.

Ask Dayang Habsah Abang Saufi how she became an artist and she is likely to point to a nickname she has carried for years – the accidental artist.

It’s a title that sounds almost too casual for someone whose work will be showcased in Germany next year during Berlin Art Week and the interdisciplinary Festival eXoplanet by Theatre Magdeburg, with support from the Steinbeis Foundation.

“I call myself the accidental artist because there was no such thing as wanting to be an artist at all. It just happened,” she told FMT Lifestyle.

The description feels fitting for a woman whose life has rarely followed a predictable script. Long before she picked up a paintbrush, Habsah studied mathematics at the University of Hull in the UK and began her career with technology giant IBM.

Over the years, she ventured into real estate, urban regeneration and fashion, with each chapter leading somewhere unexpected.

One of the most significant turning points came in 1987 when she became involved in the regeneration of Kuala Lumpur’s Central Market, helping transform the historic building into the cultural landmark it is today.

“It was one of the most exciting times of my life. The energy was just immense to transform this space, and we got all the right people.

A vaccine designed entirely by artificial intelligence has passed its first test in humans, marking a milestone in efforts to develop broader protection against future virus outbreaks.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge said the experimental vaccine is the first whose active ingredient, or antigen, was created entirely using AI and then tested in people. The findings were published in the Journal of Infection.

The vaccine is intended to serve as a “universal vaccine” against sarbecoviruses, a group of coronaviruses that includes those responsible for SARS, Covid-19, and several related agents circulating in animals that could potentially infect humans in future.

Scientists hope the approach could eventually reduce the need to continually update vaccines to keep pace with emerging variants.

“We’ve converted vaccine development from being reactive to being future proof,” study co-author Jonathan Heeney said. “It means we can escape the constant cycle of chasing virus variants circulating in humans and updating the vaccines to try to catch up, like a dog chasing its tail.”

When it comes to exams, many students tend to prioritise top grades over a genuine understanding of what they are learning.

Top student Marc Chew took a different approach, focusing on gaining a strong grasp of core concepts and steadily improving his understanding over time.

“Once I focused more on learning instead of worrying too much about results, I actually became less stressed and more motivated,” the 12-year-old told FMT Lifestyle.

“I think consistency and collaboration helped me a lot. I tried to study steadily every day instead of relying on last-minute preparation.”

His efforts certainly paid off, with the pre-teen from Sunway International Schools making history by achieving 13 A* grades in his recent Cambridge IGCSE examination.

Chew said he was grateful not only for the results, but also for the people who helped him achieve them.

“I looked at the results, but all I could see were the faces of my teachers and classmates who had been with me throughout the hectic IGCSE period.

“The grades are wonderful, but the real prize is the resilience and joy we built together as a community to get there,” said Chew.
