Quality education often comes at a price, putting extra tuition beyond the reach of many B40 families. For the past five years, Abdul Rafi Abdul Karim has been trying to bridge that gap by offering lessons free of charge.

By day, the 38-year-old teaches full-time at SK Damansara Utama in Selangor. Come 5pm, he steps into another classroom: a tuition centre in Kayu Ara established through his non-profit organisation, Pertubuhan Kebajikan Amal Sirih (Pekasih).

Originally from Perlis, Rafi first turned to community work during the pandemic, when he ran a food bank that provided aid twice a month to just under 400 people.

“It cost around RM6,000 a month. After six months, we couldn’t sustain it anymore,” he told FMT Lifestyle.

That experience made him rethink the kind of help he wanted to offer. “I realised that if we really want to help people and change their lives, providing aid alone isn’t enough.”

Decluttering is often presented as a grand transformation. The wardrobe must be emptied, the storeroom must be conquered; every container must match, every shelf must be labelled, and every drawer must look ready for social media.

For anyone already feeling overwhelmed by clutter, that vision can be enough to stop the process before it begins.

A gentler alternative is gaining attention: “soft decluttering”, an approach built around small, low-pressure tasks rather than exhausting cleanouts.

Jane Abrahams and Wendy Trunz, founders of US organising company Jane’s Addiction Organization, told The Washington Post that the method allows people to ease into tidying instead of attempting a full purge at once.

The principle is simple: choose one manageable problem, improve it, and stop before the task becomes draining. Over time, those modest efforts can make a noticeable difference.

There’s a certain charm to jewellery that looks unmistakably handmade. Yet in a market increasingly filled with mass-produced and fast-fashion pieces, such craftsmanship can be harder to find.

For Jessie Koh, that is exactly what makes handmade jewellery worth preserving.

Although she founded Jessie’s Trinket Trove in 2018, Koh did not begin her career as a jeweller. She spent years in the corporate world, including six years in the airline industry, before moving into telecommunications.

“I learnt a lot, but I always felt the creative part of my life was missing,” she told FMT Lifestyle.

Koh shared that she had always been fascinated by her mother’s jewellery. “One day, I bought a small jewellery-making kit with a book, some pliers and some beads. Once I started making things, I was instantly hooked.”

Every group holiday begins with a familiar suggestion: “We should go somewhere together.” What follows is usually a flurry of enthusiastic replies, vague promises to “check dates”, and at least one person declaring they are happy with anything.

It’s not difficult to see why. While many assume that arranging a week-long trip takes fewer than 10 hours, more than seven in 10 Malaysian travel planners said they spend longer than that.

Some 40.3% invest up to 20 hours in a single holiday, while 35.5% spend 40 hours or more.

Then, almost inevitably, one member of the group quietly takes charge. A new survey by travel platform Klook suggests this person may be doing far more work than everyone else realises.

The research, which involved 2,725 travellers across 10 markets, found that 91.9% of Malaysian respondents believe travel planners deserve more recognition for the time and effort they put into organising group holidays.

About a year ago, during Ramadan, freelance chemistry tutor Vince Hoor received a call from his local hospital. He was told there was an emergency and a patient urgently needed blood.

When Hoor arrived, he struck up a conversation with the attending medical officer. Although the recipient’s identity could not be disclosed, he learnt that the patient was a young Malay child living with thalassaemia.

As Hoor’s blood was found to be compatible, he did not hesitate to donate, knowing that blood supplies often decline during the fasting month.

He recently shared the experience on social media, writing: “My blood never knew Malay, Chinese or Indian. It only knows how to save lives. We help one another whenever we’re needed. I’m a Malaysian.”

Although the post drew praise and positive comments from netizens, Hoor insisted he was simply doing his civic duty.
