Tesis Jadi Buku™ (Thesis-to-Book): The Next Generation Academic Publishing Ecosystem
On 22 October 2025, a strategic meeting was held between UCYP University (UCYP) and Penerbitan Buku Pena (PBP) to discuss a Letter of Intent (LoI) marking the beginning of a collaborative framework for academic publishing transformation in Malaysia through the Tesis Jadi Buku™ – Narrative and Academic Comic programme.
A delegation from PBP comprising representatives from Yayasan UNITI, MSGA Sdn. Bhd., and BookHero was led by Dr. Nabilaa Mohamed, Founder and Managing Director of PBP. She presented the flagship initiative Tesis Jadi Buku™ (Thesis-to-Book) titled The Next Generation Academic Publishing Ecosystem.
The initiative aims to connect academia, researchers, and postgraduate students with the creative and entrepreneurial industries through a structured Write–Edit–Publish (TULIS–EDIT–TERBIT) model. The Narrative and Academic Comic approach highlights the creative adaptation of scholarly content into narrative and visual-academic forms, enabling knowledge to reach a wider and more diverse readership.
This model empowers postgraduate students not only to transform their academic theses into readable, sustainable, and impactful books, but also to generate entrepreneurial income through book sales and royalty-based publishing opportunities. It is built upon the three pillars of sustainability: economic, social, and environmental, ensuring that academic knowledge contributes to individual livelihoods, community development, and the broader sustainability agenda.
The meeting was attended by UCYP’s top management, including:
YH. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Muhammad Fauzi Mohd Zain, Vice-Chancellor
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Li Pin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation)
Mdm. Suhaila Hj. Mukhtar, Dean, Postgraduate School
together with UCYP’s Programme Heads and the Manager of Waqf & Endowment.
Also present were PBP’s strategic industry partners who play key roles in developing the national academic publishing ecosystem:
Yayasan UNITI, represented by Dr. Syed Omar Syed Agil, Chief Executive Officer, as the strategic development and institutional collaboration advisor, responsible for strengthening academic-industry linkages and entrepreneurship support under the UNITI Asia Group and UNITI Madani Entrepreneurship Centre (UMEC).
MSGA Sdn. Bhd., represented by Major Hasrul Taufek Roslan, Chairman (Rtd.), as the digital distribution and global marketing partner, supporting the internationalisation of Malaysian academic and creative books across digital platforms.
BookHero, represented by Ms. Siti Nazuha Hj. Ghazali Lee, Chief Executive Officer, as the national print distribution and retail partner, facilitating the physical publication, circulation, and retail presence of titles produced under the Tesis Jadi Buku™ programme.
The LoI discussion established a shared commitment to promote academic creativity, research commercialisation, sustainable entrepreneurship, and knowledge dissemination through the Tesis Jadi Buku™ ecosystem, transforming theses that remain silent within the academic system into living works that speak to society.
The meeting concluded with a closing statement by Dr. Nabilaa Mohamed, highlighting the spirit of unity and sustainability behind the initiative:
“Through the collaboration of UCYP, PBP, Yayasan UNITI, MSGA, and BookHero, the success of Tesis Jadi Buku™ becomes possible. We cannot walk this journey alone. A thesis has the power to influence national policies, and together, we must revive it for the sustainability of our economy, society, and environment.”
