We’re not fooling…Mozambique’s first female safari guide, Gabriela Curtiz, is giving personal tours of our Gorongosa National Park Exhibit. She’ll share stories from Africa, provide fun facts about the animals at Zoo Boise, and give you a peek inside the currently closed E.O. Wilson Science Center. This opportunity is only available for short-term before she heads back home for the summer. All proceeds go to support the Gorongosa Restoration Project in Mozambique. Xai-Xai city is the capital of the province of , in Mozambique. It is located 210 km north of the city of Maputo (capital of the country) and is geographically limited to the south by Chilaulene and the Indian Ocean, to the east by Chonguene, to the west by Chicumbane and to the north by the Limpopo and Ponela rivers.

The village was founded in 1897, under the name of Chai-Chai, being elevated to the category of village in 1911. In 1922 it became known as Vila Nova de Gaza, changing its name in 1928 to Vila de João Belo, in honor to a former administrator. The village was elevated to city in 1961, on the occasion of the visit of the Minister of Overseas at the time, Adriano Moreira, which resulted in the construction of the river port. After national independence, the city is now called Xai-Xai.

In 1998 elected its first Government, with the introduction of local authorities in the country. Xai-Xai was the first city to elect a Woman for President in 2004.

Administratively the city is a municipality, with an elected local government, and headed by a President of the Municipal Council.

During the coming Easter period, there will be an increase in visitors to national parks and reserves. Unfortunately, the careless behavior of some drivers can jeopardize the safety of animals that live in these conservation areas. This morning, a baby zebra was run over on National Road No. 1, on the section that crosses the Special Reserve of Maputo.

For this period of heavy traffic, the Maputo Special Reserve (REM) and the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve (RMPPO) have allocated additional inspectors to control traffic in this section.

To prevent accidents, REM and RMPPO, in collaboration with the National Institute of Land Transport (INATTER), placed speed bumps on the roads.

Additional signs were also installed to alert drivers of the presence of wild animals on the road on the highway and to respect the speed limit - which is 50 km / h in the reserve area.

In addition to the improvement of the signaling infrastructure, the reserve inspectors regularly carry out actions to raise awareness among drivers about speed limits and the prohibition of the dumping of rubbish on the roads.

We urge drivers to respect the speed limit and cross the reserve carefully, especially at night, as animals tend to stand still when illuminated by vehicle headlights.

The Maputo Special Reserve, together with the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve, form the Mozambican component of the Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation Area, which also encompasses conservation areas in South Africa and the Kingdom of eSwatini..
