Witnesses reported that five unidentified men handcuffed him, accused him of cattle theft, and drove him away in a white vehicle with concealed number plates.
Before his disappearance, Dzamara had become well known for organizing peaceful protests against the government of then-President Robert Mugabe, including the Occupy Africa Unity Square movement, and had publicly called for political and economic reforms.
As of today:
His whereabouts remain unknown.
His family has never received definitive information about what happened to him.
Zimbabwean courts ordered authorities to investigate and report on the case, but human rights organizations have criticized the investigations as inadequate and have continued to call for an independent inquiry.
Because there has been no conclusive investigation, it is not publicly known what ultimately happened to Itai Dzamara or who was responsible for his disappearance. Human rights organizations describe his case as an enforced disappearance and continue to press the Zimbabwean authorities to establish the truth.
