DPP Endorses Sameer Suleman for Speaker of Parliament

The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has announced Hon. Sameer Suleman, MP, as its official candidate for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly ahead of elections slated for October 29, 2025.

According to a statement issued by DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito, the decision has the full backing of the party’s president, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. The party has since urged all its Members of Parliament and alliance partners to rally behind Suleman, describing the upcoming election as vital to securing the ruling party’s legislative agenda and maintaining political stability.

The DPP leadership has also called for unity and full attendance of all MPs during the election session, emphasizing that collective support will be crucial to ensuring smooth parliamentary operations.

Nkhoma Synod Elects New Leadership at 41st Biennial Conference in Dedza

The CCAP Nkhoma Synod has elected new office bearers during its 41st Biennial Conference currently taking place at Namoni Katengeza in Chongoni, Dedza.

The elections have ushered in Reverend Absalom Nyasulu as the new Moderator of the Synod, succeeding Reverend Bizwick Nkhoma.

Other newly elected leaders are:

Synod Clerk: Reverend Kuthyola Mwale

Deputy Synod Clerk: Reverend Tamale

Synod Actuarius: Reverend Jere

Dedza Dynamos Rebranded as Goshen City Dedza Dynamos-Bushiri

Dedza Dynamos Football Club has every reason to celebrate after securing a major sponsorship deal with Goshen City, led by Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of the Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Church.

Prophet Bushiri has pledged to support the team for two years and six months, with a sponsorship package worth over K1 billion.

According to Bushiri, the sponsorship aims to strengthen the club financially and promote modern management practices within the team. He also commended the club’s leadership for their dedication and professionalism in running the team.

Bushiri emphasized that his goal is to transform Dedza Dynamos into one of the leading football clubs in Malawi and across Africa.

In his remarks, the club’s secretary, Kondwani Banda, expressed gratitude for the timely support, noting that the team has been facing serious financial challenges. He assured fans and stakeholders that the funds will be used responsibly to fulfill Prophet Bushiri’s vision for the club.

Currently, Dedza Dynamos sit in 12th position on the TNM Super League table with 21 points from 19 matches.

President Mutharika Announces partial Cabinet

President Arthur Peter Mutharika has made a series of new cabinet and official appointments with immediate effect, according to a press release from the Office of the President and Cabinet dated October 5, 2025.

Among the major appointments is the naming of the Right Honourable Enock Kanzingeni Chihana as the Second Vice President of the Republic of Malawi.

Other notable appointments include Honourable George Chaputala Chaponda as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Honourable Joseph Mathyola Mwanamvekha as Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development.

Honourable Alfred Ruwan Gangata has been appointed Minister of State, while Lieutenant General George Alexander Jafu has been elevated to Chief of Defence for the Malawi Defence Force (MDF).

In the civil service, Dr. Justin Sadack K. Saidi has been appointed Chief Secretary to the Government, with Mr. Stuart Naison Medison Ligomeka serving as Deputy Chief Secretary. Mr. Kiswell Dakamau has been named Director of State Residences.

The President has also made key appointments in the Malawi Police Service. Mr. Richard Chakupaleza Chikoko Luhanga becomes the Inspector General of Police, while Mr. Stain Bamusi Chaima and Mr. Mlowoka Noel Kaira have been appointed Deputy Inspectors General responsible for Operations and Administration, respectively.

According to the statement signed by Dr. Maxwell S. Tsitsi, Chief Secretary to the Government, all the appointments take effect immediately.

Below is the full list of new appointments:

Meanwhile, the newly appointed Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General George Alexander Jafu, brings extensive experience to the role. He joined the Malawi Defence Force in 1988 and has served as Inspector General, Chief of Staff at Joint Headquarters, and Military Adviser to Malawi’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

In May 2024, he was appointed Deputy Commander of the MDF. He holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Management from Derby University in the United Kingdom and has completed several advanced military training courses, including Joint Operations Planning and UN Military Observer Training.

Born on 19 November 1962, Lieutenant General Jafu hails from Mpondasi Village, Traditional Authority Mponda, in Mangochi District.

President-elect Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and Vice President-elect Dr. Jane Ansah were sworn into office today as President and Vice President of the Republic of Malawi.

The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda, in accordance with Section 9 of the Constitution.

Mutharika, who also leads the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), becomes Malawi’s 7th President, succeeding Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, after winning 56.8 percent of the votes in the September 16 general elections.

In a symbolic handover, the Chief Justice presented Mutharika with the national flag, the coat of arms, and a copy of the Constitution, officially marking the beginning of his leadership.
