TO***CO CONTROL BILL | The Ministry of Health and Social Services on Thursday conducted consultations on the To***co Products Control Amendment Bill of 2026 in Nkurenkuru.

The consultation provided an opportunity for members of the public and key stakeholders to engage with the proposed legislation and contribute to strengthening to***co control measures in Namibia.

SCHOLARSHIP | Following a media report by the MICT Kavango West office of the self-taught innovator Visentius Kapumburu (19) from Gcwagi village who, despite having dropped out of formal school in grade 3 produces his own electricity at home, the Ngato Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) was touched by the story and have thus, come on-board to support the young man's innovation skills.

NIST has offered him a three year full scholarship to study Solar Equipment Installation and Maintenance, Level 1 to Level 3 at the institution from 07 September 2026.

During NIST's visit at Kapumburu's house on Wednesday, the institution also donated Kapumburu's mother with a cellphone to keep in-contact with her son while away on studies, as well as convenience goods such as snacks, amongst others to start her informal business at home.

WIND DESTRUCTION | Elizabeth Mukwahepo Haingura, a resident of Tondoro village in Tondoro constituency was left traumatised after strong winds around Tuesday midnight lifted and overturned the roof of her house, causing extensive damage to the property, valued at approximately N$200,000.

Haingura said the sudden incident shocked her so severely that she collapsed and had to be rushed to hospital for medical attention.

The storm also damaged electrical infrastructure in the area after a tree fell onto a NORED power line, leaving electrical cables lying on the ground and posing a potential danger to residents.

NORED officials have since been seen attending to the damaged power infrastructure.

LIFELONG LEARNING MONTH | Kavango West education director Pontianus Musore has called on communities to embrace learning as a lifelong journey that extends beyond the classroom through literacy, reading, culture, arts and the sharing of knowledge across generations.

Musore made the remarks on Tuesday during the launch of Lifelong Learning Month 2026, emphasising that learning does not end after graduation, but continues throughout life in homes, communities and workplaces.

The month-long programme includes Adult Learners’ Week, the Inter-Regional Choir Competition, Culture and Heritage activities and Readathon, aimed at promoting literacy, culture, creativity and continuous learning.

CULTURAL FESTIVAL | IUM Nkurenkuru Campus is hosting a four-day Cultural Festival which was officially opened on Thursday. The festival is a celebration of identity, heritage and the values that unite the IUM community. It also brings together students to celebrate and showcase the richness and diversity of their cultural heritage.

The programme will also feature a range of cultural activities and performances, including appearances by international and local artists, panel discussions as well as the highly anticipated Miss and Mr IUM Nkurenkuru Campus 2026.

Held under the theme ‘Preserving Heritage, Celebrating Unity,’ the festival provides a platform for students to embrace their diverse traditions while promoting cultural appreciation, unity and inclusivity within the campus community.

INNOVATION |19 year-old Visentius Kapumburu from Gcwagi village in Kavango West has for about two years now been generating his own electricity at home using assembled discarded materials.

Kapumburu assembled positive and negative plates from car batteries and other discarded materials and placed them in a bucket of water where the whole process of generating electricity takes place.

His innovation has provided his home with lights, the ability to charge cellphones and power radios.

His creativity has also led him to build a powered toy airplane, which unfortunately flew away as he did not have a handheld radio control unit to control it.

Kapumburu is a grade 3 drop-out, therefore, his talent is God-given. He is, however, open to any training opportunities that will enhance his talent.

He is in need of new light bulbs as the ones he has been using have burnt-out. He can be reached at 0816996871.
