ELINDI DISMISSES N$480 MILLION CLAIM, INSISTS DEAL WAS LEGAL ||

Windhoek, 18 July 2025 — Businessman Peter Elindi has rejected claims that N$480 million is at the centre of the case against him, telling the court on Thursday that the only amount he is aware of is N$53 million — which he described as part of a legitimate commercial transaction.

Testifying during his bail hearing, Elindi accused the media of misrepresenting the matter and fuelling public outrage based on false information.

“There is no N$480 million. That number doesn’t exist,” he told the court, insisting the deal in question was above board and not criminal in nature.

Elindi further distanced himself from co-accused Victor Malima, saying the two are no longer on speaking terms and have no financial links. He also told the court he has no money in his bank account.

He reminded the court that he voluntarily handed himself over to the Anti-Corruption Commission and surrendered his passport to his lawyers. “I’m not a flight risk,” he said.

The prosecution, however, maintains that the case involves public funds and is of significant public interest.

INCOMPETENT TOWN COUNCIL PULLS THE USUAL TRIBAL CARD ||

The Katima Mulilo Town Council (KMTC) has accused Deputy Minister of Urban and Rural Development James Sankwasa of spreading lies, tribal division, and political interference.

This comes after Sankwasa’s visit in May, where he accused the council of selling public land without ministerial approval and ordered the return of three luxury vehicles linked to a questionable land deal.

In a statement this week, KMTC hit back, saying the minister is abusing his office and pushing a personal agenda after losing labour disputes against the council. They also accused him of making “tribally charged” comments and called his behaviour undemocratic and dangerous.

The council warned that his threats to downgrade the municipality to a village council would hurt service delivery and development.

However, the council itself has a poor track record. It is known for rejecting expert advice from educated Zambezi natives, often telling them they are too young to advise elders. One engineer from the region even resigned because the CEO and councillors refused to listen to his technical input.

As a result, Katima Mulilo still does not have a stormwater drainage system, and its town planning and infrastructure are far below the standards expected of a town. The council continues to struggle to keep qualified technical staff due to its resistance to expert guidance.

IPC BRUSHES OFF MEMBER RESIGNATIONS ||

The Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) says it remains focused and stable following the resignation of four members on Monday, who cited favouritism and a lack of transparency in the party.

IPC spokesperson Imms Nashinge confirmed the departures, saying the resignations were received via WhatsApp and advising the former members to follow formal procedures.

“We still have plenty of members left to govern with transparency, accountability, patriotism, and grace,” he said, adding that the party is not in crisis and continues to grow.

The members who resigned are Kristofina Ashfield, Kathy Mandeinge, Oscar Johannes, and Karen Janecki.

ELINDI SAYS ENERCON BUILT MILITARY SERVICE STATIONS WITH OWN FUNDS ||

Peter Elindi has told the court that Enercon spent N$58 million to build nine service stations at Ministry of Defence sites, based on a 15-year cost-recovery agreement with the ministry.

Testifying in his ongoing case, Elindi said Enercon later sold the stations to NAMCOR for N$53 million while he served as company chairperson.

He claimed the stations still belong to Enercon, but when pressed on whether proof of ownership was given to NAMCOR, he avoided a direct answer, only saying a list of assets had been submitted.

TWO BUSTED FOR COPPER THEFT IN BUKALO ||

Zambezi police have arrested two men, aged 28 and 36, for allegedly stealing copper cables in Bukalo village on Monday.

Police spokesperson Inspector Kisco Sitali said the suspects, believed to be repeat offenders, were caught in the act after a tip-off. They also damaged a sub power kiosk during the theft.

“The value of the stolen cables is yet to be determined,” Sitali said, adding that copper theft has been on the rise since 2023.

He urged communities to stay alert and report suspicious activity.

FISHCOR CHAIRPERSON MILKA MUNGUNDA RESIGNS ||

Fishcor board chairperson Milka Mungunda has stepped down from her role, with her resignation confirmed by the corporation’s chief executive, Clive Gawanab.

“I can confirm that she handed her resignation letter to the minister, but I’m not privileged to the particulars,” Gawanab said on Tuesday.

Mungunda reportedly submitted her resignation to agriculture, fisheries, water and land reform minister Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi on 27 June, citing personal reasons. Her term was set to end in October.

Gawanab dismissed suggestions of internal tensions within the board, saying, “There is no animosity among board members and the chairperson. She left for personal reasons known only to her and Minister Inge Zaamwani-Kamwi.”

Mungunda, who also serves as the chief executive of the Social Security Commission, was appointed as interim chair of Fishcor in 2020, following the corporation’s implication in the high-profile Fishrot corruption scandal of 2019.

Deputy chairperson Saul Kahuika is currently serving as acting chair until a permanent replacement is named. Mungunda was appointed to the board alongside former magistrate Ruth Herunga, former Namibian Competition Commission CEO Mihe Gaomab II, and Penny Hiwilepo-van Hal.

HENGARI CLAIMS ARREST WAS A TRAP, TELLS COURT DETENTION HURTING HIS FAMILY AND BUSINESS ||

Former Agriculture Minister MacAlbert Hengari told the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday that his arrest was the result of a trap, and that he was never shown an arrest warrant.

Hengari, who was arrested in April, took the witness stand as part of his ongoing bail application. His lawyer, Mekumbu Tjiteere, led his testimony.

Hengari testified that the charges against him only began to gain traction after his appointment, moving from social media speculation to mainstream coverage. He said police later contacted him with a summary of allegations allegedly made against him in Oshakati.

He also appealed for bail, saying his continued detention is harming his business operations and compromising his ability to support his son’s education and the livelihoods of extended family members who depend on him.

The State, however, strongly opposed bail. Prosecutors cited concerns over possible interference with witnesses, the seriousness of the allegations, public interest, and the need to uphold the integrity of the justice system.

Katima Council Hits Back at Minister Sankwasa, Accuses Him of Tribalism and Abuse of Power ||

The Katima Mulilo Town Council (KMTC) has fired back at Urban and Rural Development Minister James Sankwasa, accusing him of political interference, tribal incitement, and a campaign of misinformation.

In a strongly worded statement issued today, the council responded to Sankwasa’s controversial May visit, during which he accused the council of illegally selling public land without ministerial approval. He also ordered the return of three high-end vehicles allegedly linked to a questionable land deal.

KMTC has now accused the minister of abusing his office and using the media to push false narratives, alleging that his actions are motivated by a personal vendetta following past legal defeats in labour disputes involving the council.

The council condemned what it described as “tribally charged” remarks by the minister, including calls for the removal of Masubia and SWAPO councillors—calling such rhetoric undemocratic and a threat to national unity.

Additionally, the council warned that Sankwasa’s threats to downgrade Katima Mulilo from a town council to a village council would severely undermine development and basic service delivery in the Zambezi Region.

‘I WON’T APOLOGISE FOR DOING BUSINESS,’ SAYS ELINDI ||

Businessman Peter Elindi has pushed back against allegations of corruption, telling the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court he has nothing to apologise for.

“I am not ashamed of a good deal,” Elindi said during his bail hearing on Tuesday, as his lawyer Sisa Namandje described the fuel-related transaction at the heart of the case as simply “lucrative.”

Elindi also dismissed suggestions that he paid bribes to former Namcor employees, maintaining his innocence as he nears the end of his evidence-in-chief.

BRITISH TOURIST SEEKS BAIL IN SAN CHILDREN CASE ||

Douglas Brooks, a British tourist facing charges related to n**e photographs of San children in Tsumkwe, has applied for bail set at N$50,000.

In Monday’s hearing at the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court, Brooks’ lawyer, Thomas Andima, assured the court that his client would remain in the district and would only travel with police permission.

The prosecution, represented by Kristiana Erastus, opposed the bail request, expressing concerns that Brooks might flee and noting that the victims are still receiving counselling.

Magistrate Boniface Konga is expected to rule on the matter on Friday.

Brooks remains detained as the case continues.
